Looks rather stiff, and the MLB logo does not seem of the era (although I admit that I am not a logo expert).

There shouldn't be a trademark on that pennant....especially one that looks like it was drawn with a Sharpie.

Yes this is a repro from the late 70s or early 80s. The specific design of the MLB logo dates it, as does the thin paper-like material. Here’s a Pilots pennant with the same trademark that often gets passed on as “authentic”.

The real version is cloth, with tassels, and without MLB.

The seller's other pennant looks like a repro as well... right?

No way this is from 1968...

This one is actually vintage, it’s made of cloth, the spine indicates ASCO. There is also an undated version of this pennant.

Interesting. Very unique looking modern pennant. Tough to find, Greg?

Rob … eh, I guess for semi-modern pennants, yes. I just love the cloth ASCO pennants. The top 3 are likely 1967-68ish, as they are without the MLB stamp. The orange is most common and has the 1969 MLB.

None of us are too interested in mid-70's pennants, but I thought I'd share a few pages from a catalog a buddy gave me yesterday...Pep Line?

Is Pep Line related to Trench? I always assumed the football helmet pennants were Trench.

Over the last few years I've become an avid fan of 70s pennants. Combination of quarantine and "vintage" drying up on eBay. There are some pretty rare ones that probably only a handful of pennant freaks like us can appreciate for how rare they are.

Yes...The Pirates in particular seem to have some very cool 1970s pennants. Probably more than most teams.

I too like the uncommon 1970s and early 1980s pennants. Here is one that just arrived today. Had been looking for the orange version for a few years. They probably only made this one for one season (when they were not very good), which is why it is not easy to find.

Never heard of anybody d/b/a "Pep Line 75."

But, at first glance, those photo pennants screamed ASCO. You can even see ASCO's mark on that red Ft. Myers pennant, bottom left corner (arrow through circle)!

So I went back and found a 1976-dated ASCO pennant scan I saved ... and noted one or two similarities, which I think you'll spot despite the blurry nature of my scans below!

If I had to guess, I'd say Pep Line was a distributor of other pennant makers' products--at least when it came to licensed merch. In this case, it looks like they were distributing Trench-made NFL pennants; and ASCO-made photo pennants. They probably specialized in the production of other school products, like pinbacks, pom poms, and maybe chenille letters made for high schools markets.

Rob, do we know where this company was located? Ny guess is there's an address somewhere in there where you mail your order to?

I won this a year or so ago, a ‘69 cloth ASCO in the original Rah Rah “packaging”. Of course I took that right the hell off …

They definitely distributed ASCO products...I found "ASCO" on one of their bumperstickers and could see "Winona, Minn" on a pinback. Also, the whole "Rah! Rahs!" thing. At first, I thought this was an ASCO catalog and maybe Pep Line was a "line" of products, like a Pro line or a College line. But the bottom left of the inside cover makes it look like a company name. The inside cover also makes it look like they made the pennants (at least some of them), due to the "Art Charges, Proofs, Screen Charges", etc. I recognize some Minnesota names on some of their High School stuff and am 99% sure that's where they were located. My best guess is they sold ASCO professional name stuff and made high school and college stuff...

Here’s another that is definitely not vintage and not 1960s as described.

Here is an interesting one from a current ebay auction (it has a healthy BIN price, so don't feel like I am outing anything). It is two sided with 1945 Alabama Sugar Bowl graphics on one side and Chicago Cubs on the other. Seems like an unlikely pairing. Given the year, it may have just been an era of not wanting to waste. Maybe the Sugar Bowl stuff did not sell so they just turned it into baseball for the Spring? Of maybe it was something that was never supposed to make it off the factory floor? (trying something out?)

That is indeed an interesting pairing. If nothing else, it puts a nice date on the Cubbie Pennant. That's always been one of my favorites, and the mid-1940s timing is just what the great graphics would imply.

Great post!

I have seen that Cubs pennant in the past with graphics on both sides. I don’t recall it being an Alabama Sugar Bowl pennant. I want to think
its comes up more frequently in blue.

That’s a tough Alabama pennant too. There were plenty of unsold stock on those bowl game pennants especially when they dated them thus only allowing one game to sell them at. If they weren’t sold on that day, good luck selling them after the fact. Most of these double sided pennants are from the Chicago area so I’m sure whoever made this one came home with unsold stock and figured they’d try to get something out of it. Most double sided ones are pretty tough so I’ve wondered in the past if they double sided the ones they displayed for sale, but actually sold from another pile. Most you find are generally in good shape too. Who knows.

Well-respected seller of cards. Obviously, they don’t know squat about pennants.

One of many obvious repros on eBay with no disclosure. So annoying.

I think this one is legit but from ‘68. Cloth pennants don’t date back to the 1930s. Not sure if that patch came with it …

Beautiful Detroit Lions Briggs Stadium football pennant just sold on eBay among a bunch of Lions/Tigers pennants … colors were really vivid and condition strong. Now that we have a better grasp on pennant makers, it’s interesting how both Trench and WGN seem to have saved their best for the Detroit teams. WGN made all the year-stamped Tigers and Trench has about a dozen different stadium versions … are there any exclusive Tigers pennant collectors out there?

Picked up a couple of basketball pennants from Spain. One is a Lakers and the other has the Barcelona Olympics mascot on it (dream team Olympics). The first time I’ve seen a European Lakers pennant.

Greg,

I have only collected Tiger pennants for about the last 6-7 years. I've recently started collecting other Detroit teams / MLB pennants since most of the Tiger pennants I need only come up in auction once and awhile.

Not the most exciting....but I had never seen a Virginia Tech Gobblers pennant before. This is what $6.00 shipping gets you these days. If anyone is interested, I suspect it will be back on ebay in about a week.

So sad....
What the hell is the matter with some sellers?

Nope...No chance. Back it goes. Will be interesting to see if the guy changes the pictures when he re-lists it.

And this guy is not alone. I had similar experiences with two other sellers last week. The "What? You're kidding? I didn't realize. I want my buyers to be happy" routine is getting old.

I started the project this weekend of cataloguing hard copies of all my auction house purchases...invoices and pictures. Something I thought about doing for years but never got around to it. Both fortunately and unfortunately (for my collection), my first AH purchase was in 2017 so the invoices are all easily available. But I can't seem to pull up historical Cleansweep pictures. The invoices are there, but I don't see any way to get to the pictures. Has anyone tried this?

I was in Cooperstown today. My son is playing in a baseball tournament. One of the souvenir shops there has been in business since the 1940s, selling baseball stuff since the 1960s. This old ad from their store was posted up by the register, with some familiar looking pennants ($1.00 each).

They also still have some new old stock baseball items (no pennants, unfortunately) from 1950s-1970s. See pics below. The round felt patches have never been easy for me to find. They have a decent selection of them at the store (see pics), for a few teams at least. $10 per patch. Not so bad.

And, prince that he is, bocca called me today from Cooperstown to see if I needed anything. I did and he hooked me up. This is what the hobby is, at its best.

Great stuff Marc! Those sealed emblems are very cool. And hey...I see pennants in the bottom picture.

PS...Try Ommegang.

PPS...Only 99 degrees today. It's cooling off!

Just wanted to revive this thread from it's current stagnancy. Skip the ad, and then check out this video clip from the 8:50 - 8:55 mark...

Pics in post 6216 … I enjoy these videos. Back then I thought they were Ad flag but they could be WGN. The Trench ASG pennants are best but for some reason they ditched the scroll that year.

There are plenty of cool 1960s NFL/AFL videos and pennant shots are plenty

It has been quite dead, hasn’t it? Some of you heavy hitters need to get busy.

As an aside, I am doubtful I will ever add another SF Giants pennant to my collection. I know what I’m looking for but doubt I’ll ever find any of them.

I feel the same way about the Rams. So my interests expand in other directions. Not a lot of old pennants turning up lately but phantom pennants have been.
