1971 OPC Baseball card #289 Rusty Staub

289 was the White Sox Team Card in the original Topps set.

For anyone who is an Expos collector (like me) that OPC card is in extremely high demand, which probably explains the high price. Staub is remembered in Montreal as the team’s first star and one of the most important players in Expos history, but there were only a few regular cards of him in an Expos uniform ever released. The 1971 (both Topps and OPC) are probably the best looking of those, and since the OPC is scarcer and 289 specifically has a different pose it is very much sought after by Expos fans.

Hmmmm, never knew this. What other quirks are there in the OPC set in terms of subbed out cards? Did the Chisox Team ever get issued in Canada?

Well there is at least two other Expo players that have two cards in the OPC version and only one in the Topps version

Thanks for the link...great information. Growing up close to the Canada border as a kid we HATED OP cards and threw them away...lol. Not even sure why, just did. I used that list today to add the different poses to my binder set (except Staub and Raymond...quite the premium!), fun purchases...

What else?

OPC cards were poorly made, so centering and smooth borders are rare. They have a tiny pop compared to Topps. The backs are much nicer than Topps cards (in printing terms, they used two-sided stock instead of one-sided), higher grade is rare. Even midgrade superstars are costly.

Yet interestingly enough, there are two #513 OPC Ryan's in PSA 10, and no 10's for regular Topps.

I’m about 140 High #’s short of completing this set, thankfully got into them before they really took off. Only OPC set I’m doing.

Have maybe ten HOF studs in psa 6 or 7. A nice Clemente is going to be the toughest to obtain.

Clemente leading the pack because of his popularity, but the high numbers in even mid-grade are sooooo tough! Good luck completing yours.
