Aaaaa HA!
Sweet, that will squeeze a bit more coin for you out of the cache. I have to second vintagetoppsguy on a previous comment. Find someone who will get those coins out of the holders. If they come out and are not damaged, and depending on the mint marks, there is more potential value to each of those coins depending on where they were minted. At a minimum, you know you have melt value to them and the jewelry around them. If the coins are undamaged there is the potential of a better return. You should separate the coins from the holders so you can get a more accurate accounting of both coin and jewelry. Both accurately weighed instead of a ballpark weight. 90% for the coins and 58% gold for the 14k parts. It is all about the Cobb sir.

Good morning all
I wanted to thank you all for your really insightful advice last weekend with my $5 gold coin cufflinks I have decided to sell them and wanted to ask if you might know of anyone who you know might be interested in these - I have been in touch with a few potential buyers but have not locked in a deal yet. Based on all of your advice, I am hoping to get $1500 Net to me for the pair - thanks for any leads or ideas you might have…. I posted them on EBay but I don’t know how much attention I’ll get since I am obviously not a jewelry seller there. Thanks again, all! #tyCobborBust |

Please don't take what I say the wrong way, but people really don't wear that kind of jewelry much anymore. I think you're going to have a hard time selling them as cuff links. I think to make the most money, you'll have to remove the bezels and chains and show that the coins aren't damaged. If they're not, you can list them on eBay and get about $700 each. Then you could sell the bezels and chains for scrap. That would get you a little more than the $1500 you're hoping to net. But if the coins are damaged, then the whole thing isn't worth more than scrap value. Anyway, that's just what I'd do. Heck, if I knew the coins weren't damaged, I'd give you $1500.

I would think any jeweler should be able to do it. But make sure you let them know to be careful with the coins. A coin shop might be able to do it as well and they would know to be careful with the coins.

Final chapter… just want to close down the thread with good news and thanks. Butch helped me find a well regarded and fair local coin shop and I just drove there, nice guys and a fair deal for sure. Just a 1/2 whisker where I hoped to end up.
Thanks again to all for your very helpful advice - now… back to my red portrait Cobb search! |
