"El Guajiro de Laberinto"
"El Premier" "El Curvo" Conrado E. "Connie" Marrero Ramos. Pitcher for the Washington Senators in 1950-1954. 39 wins and 3 saves in 5 MLB seasons. 1951 All-Star. After a long and successful career in Cuba, he made his MLB debut at age 38 in 1950. His best season was 1952 as he posted a 11-8 record with an ERA of 2.88 in 184.1 innings pitched. When he died in 2014, he was the oldest living MLB player. An era closed for both the Cuban and North American versions of a shared national pastime on April 23, 2014, when the oldest surviving former big-leaguer, Conrado Marrero, passed away quietly in his beloved native homeland. The news of the Cuban legend’s passing came less than 48 hours before a planned national celebration of the ex-pitcher’s milestone 103rd birthday. If one sad irony might attach to the fact that Marrero so minimally failed to reach yet another landmark anniversary, a more fitting coincidence perhaps arises from the fact this “poet of the pitching mound” succumbed on the precise date that marks the deaths of the Western world’s two greatest wordsmiths: William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes. One of Cuba’s grandest baseball legends, Marrero, born April 25, 1911, reached his most significant milestone when he turned a robust 100 years old in the spring of 2011. The last living Cuban big leaguer from pre-revolution days had been quietly residing at the modest Havana apartment of his grandson Rogelio for most of the past two decades. While well into his late eighties, the indefatigable island legend was still serving as a part-time pitching coach for the Cuban League team in Granma Province. His last notable public appearance came when he tossed a ceremonial first pitch for the landmark May 1999 Team Cuba-Baltimore Orioles exhibition match in Havana’s equally venerable Latin American Stadium. https://www.net54baseball.com/attach...1&d=1642984357 |

Saludos cordiales --

Rolando,
Love the threads of info. I have a few images in my collection that I need help with identifying the players. First Image 1. I believe I have seen the team logo on the player that is labeled #4. I believe it appears on players in the 1928 Aguilitas set or possibly the Mallorquina set. 2. Player number 8 looks familiar, but can't remember where I may have seen him. 3. Any players look familiar? Second Image 1. Far right player standing seems to have a Cuban Stars jersey on. 2. Any players look familiar? Third Image 1. Avelino Canizares is standing 2nd from right. Any other players look familiar? Thanks for any and all help! |

The José L. Piedra Tobacco Factory also contributed baseball cards, in 1940 during the World Amateur Championship, it printed cards of the players who participated, in Volume 1 of my catalog they appear, now I show a page of the brochure printed for the championship, and two tobacco rings from said Factory, and you will see a very small one compared to the normal size, that ring was awarded at an exhibition held in Spain in the 50s, for being considered the smallest tobacco ring in the world.

George Raft, the cinema, the Almendares team and the Capri Casino, the well-known gangster movie actor of the 30s and 40s, was a supporter of the Almendares baseball team, as well as the main manager of the Capri Casino in Vedado, Havana. , I show photos with the Almendares and the Casino and some chips from that time, I have a very interesting anecdote from the Capri Casino on the last day, if you are interested let me know.

Fascinating. Raft was also a pro boxer under the name Dutch Rauft. He had somewhere between 14 and 25 fights over two years then decided to go into show business.

This has been an incredible thread! Roland, you have an amazing collection! Could you or anyone else please help me with the photo shown below that I recently acquired? The picture appears to be of the Clio baseball team. They are sitting under a sign for the Marianao baseball club. I found an earlier image of a Clio team scorecard on Ryan's website but very little else about the team. Here are my questions:
1. What approximate era is this photo from? I am guessing teens/1920s based on the equipment but I am not sure. 2. Was this a local team or some sort of semi pro team? 3. Is Clio a town in Cuba? I am having some trouble with online searches for that information. 4. Any other information about this photo or where it was taken? 5. What Marianao team was founded in 1910? My online search skills are limited, but I thought Wikipedia showed the Marianao team starting in the 1920s. I have a better scan (600 DPI) I can email if that helps. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide. Alan Last edited by aelefson; 08-24-2022 at 06:33 PM. Reason: forgot attachment |

Answers to your questions, the Clio team played in the Amateur League, the Marianao of 1910 is amateurs, I show you two photos, the 1st equal to yours, the other from an El Score Magazine of 1911, the third standing that appears pictured is Manuel Baranda, who played in 1914 for the Old Newark Long Branch team of the Atlantic League.
