Yes it's actually more common than you think: Who's Who in America way back in the day always put in a fake listing or two to catch people harvesting their lists.

You don't do that very often but it's a good way to trap people.

On a "pricing" level that's how Dr. Beckett won his lawsuit against Card Price Update Back in the 1984 as all the Bill Virdon cards were listed as a semi-star except for the 1963 card (frankly as a 1st series card it probably was a common) but CPU used his structure and that was the key factor in how he won the lawsuit back in the day.

So you throw in a very rare mistake to see if someone copies your error.
