I never thought I would spend 5K on a card, then the bar was 10K, then 15K, then 20K. I guess it would depend on cash flow and desire for the card and whether I could budget for it. Not having enough money for the cards you want actually focuses your attention on what is really important to your collection.

Market Conditions Have Me Concerned, Last year I did a lot of selling into the strength. Not buying. Unless a 53 Topps Mays High Grade Comes Along.

The '53 Mays has gotten competitive the last 12 months. I've not been looking at anything over vg-ex so I'm sure the high grades are seeing the same.

Let's just say I would have to sell stuff in order to continue buying what I was buying 5 years ago. Back in 2013 when the 86 Fleer Jordan was at 10K, I remember thinking that was insane. Today, there are plenty of collectors with multiple 10K cards like it's nothing. One thing I have noticed is that my collection is getting smaller and smaller because I keep having to sell multiple items in order to purchase that one bigger item because I can't even keep up with the price fluctuations. I'm just glad I didn't really buy during the hype last year and decided to wait it out and stand on the sidelines.

I've come close but draw the line at $5k and have yet to exceed that for a single card(I think). My buying habits have changed and I now prefer volume over individual value because it's fun to diversify. It sneaks up on you though and $5k can happen quickly. My avg purchase is ~$350 which is drawn down by the fact that my $750-900 bids have not been good enough lately. Been getting smoked on ebay and a few auctions. The current goal is to leave a hoard of cards for my kids to "find" when I'm gone. Cards along with precious metals, collectibles, art and items collected over my decade and a half of travelling(being shipped to) unique lands all over the globe . I have always loved the stories of finds from dad/grandpa/uncle's closet or attic so why not create one myself.

0.1% of my total liquid assets. (Which is getting lower by the day. Ouch!)

Depends on a number of things. Did I make any large card purchases recently? Does it fit in to a project I have at the moment? Is the value in the same ballpark as the asking price, or will it appreciate to it? My threshold has also changed as I've gotten older; when I was in college, spending more than $100 or so on a card was something I needed to budget for, now it isn't.
