Johnny Lujack "The Shoe Filler" the story of an 18 year old called to quarterback Notre Dame's 1943 Varsity against Army before 76,000 fans. The giant Irish right end Jumbo Yonakor tries to settle Johnny down (Johnny is starting because starter Angelo Bertelli was called into service with the Marine Corps). Johnny is limping because his shoes are to tight the trainer gives him Bertellis shoes. Coach Frank Leahy gives a pep talk. Yankee Stadium is packed. "Pass play to Yonakor" goes for 65 yards then "Shoe-filler" hits Yonakor again for a touchdown! After hitting five in a row Lujack throws an interception but Johnny makes the tackle. Halftime talk from coach Leahy. Jim White intercepts Armys QB Glenn Davis Notre Dame's ball! Savage running by Creighton Miller and Jim Mello put the Irish in scoring position then Johnny hits Jumbo Yonakor with another score 13-0! Fourth Quarter now 20-0 and the Irish have the ball on the Army one yard line. In the huddle the players call the play they want Lujack to run a quarterback sneak "I'll give it a try" Lujack scores now 26-0 and as the game ends Johnny is carried off the field. The trainer and coach agree Lujack can keep Bertellis shoes.
