I picked this scrapbook up over 25 years ago. It's been packed away all this time. I had an old man come in to my dad's card shop around 1990. He had heard that we collected older baseball stuff. He presented me with this scrapbook he had made as a child in Chicago. He had no family and wanted it to go to a collector that wouldn't chop it up and that I could have it for $100. As an eager young collector I was in awe of the book and the stories he told. I agreed after a few hours of conversation and have kept my word to this day.
As much as I have enjoyed the book and the memories it no longer fits into my collection focus. Time to decide what to do with it. I feel it's best to keep my word and leave it intact, even though I'm sure he has long since past. However, a part of me is torn to spread some of its contents to collectors for display. I know value wise I could make more parting it out, but what kind of value does it hold complete? The book is a little over 50 pages. There are wire photos, team photos, lots of great newspaper clippings, damn near complete 39 Chicago Cubs photo pack - 21/25, large baseball magazine posters and miscellaneous drawings by the original collector. It's obvious that he was a Cubs fan. I added pictures of some of the pages as a sampling. I love to hear others thoughts and opinions. Thanks Craig

Beautiful album. As cool as scrapbooks are, there really is little market for them. Newsprint cut outs basically have no value. EBay has a dozen or so similar scrapbooks at any given time up and they usually don't sell. Unless there is a valuable card or photo in there somewhere, they aren't worth breaking apart. Lot of work; minimal reward.
It's such a cool item; unless someone identifies something of real value in it I'd just put it on a shelf and take it out once a year and enjoy it. I always marvel at the care taken and love of the game/team these things show. Last edited by Snapolit1; 10-14-2021 at 04:00 PM. |

I agree with Steve.
It is amazing for the memories and history and time someone took putting it together Keeping together is the thing most people would do. I would wait and see if anyone here identifies anything if true value If not either hold onto it or find someone to pass it on to that will keep your word to that old man alive.

As an old Cub guy. I agree with all the posts. I don't know a value but keep it intact. Perhaps a young Cub or baseball guy would love to have it an keep it intact. I have some similar one's I am trying to figure out what to do with. One is primarily a Reds one with some Cubs clippings, one has 1947 WS coverage and the 1950 All Star game with many clippings of photos of players and one is from 1947-49 with many newspaper photos and coverage of the 1947 All Star game. Also has a photo of Larry Doby first Negro player in AL and All Star records from 1933-1949 with the 1949 All Star line-up. I haven't looked at them in years as I have them in plastic bags. I have no one who cares to leave them to so I gather they will either be put in an auction or whatever when I go. But, again, I would keep it intact.

It looks like a great scrapbook. I agree with others that it seems best to keep it together.
I've been buying a few scrapbooks hear and there. I love them - they're a snapshot in history. I really like the dedication that went into assembling these. If you're interested in moving it on (as a complete scrapbook), I'd certainly be interested.

my opinion is that because of the artwork added by the owner, it has more value than a usual book $250 to $400 to the right person

I agree with Steve and the others to keep it as is and try to find someone that will agree to do the same.
