Picked this card up today:
![]() Got me thinking...is there a multi-player RC that doesn't feature a Hall of Famer with more total WAR represented? Using BB-R WAR, Blue has 45.1 and Tenace has 46.8 for a total of 91.9. Can anyone think of a card with a higher total? Maybe we need 2, 3, and 4 card categories? (Apologies if this has already been discussed. If it has, I couldn't find the thread) |

Almost a dead heat with Dwight Evans and Al Bumbry. 91.6 as I read it.

I remember going to a Giants game in 1978 and seeing Vida Blue shagging balls in the outfield during batting practice. He would reach down and flip the ball backwards, like he was hiking a football to his side, into the outfield bleachers, where people would scramble after the balls. It made me think he was a fan-friendly ballplayer.

This one is kind of cheating, but technically meets the criteria:
1963 Topps 537 Pete Rose - 79.6 Al Weiss - 2.3 Ken McMullen - 34.0 Pedro Gonzalez - 1.3 Total - 117.2 |

Or perhaps 1978 Topps 708 will be more palatable:
Bo Diaz - 11.5 Dale Murphy - 46.5 Lance Parrish - 39.5 Ernie Whitt - 18.3 Total - 115.8 |

But not Dale's RC.

1972 Topps #79 was 106.6 with Cecil Cooper (36.0), Carlton Fisk (68.4) and Mike Garman (2.2), but obviously there are higher.

But Fisk is a HOF. Looking for highest w/o a Hall of Famer.

2001 Topps Pujols/Ichiro would literally meet your criteria and log in at 160.

Barry Bonds has a WAR of 162.7, so technically, any multi-player RC would have to beat that.

But Bonds doesn’t appear on a multi-player RC.

Figured there may be something modern of guys not YET in the Hall. Pujols/Ichiro is tough to beat, although within about 6 years will no longer qualify.

I can't imagine it can be beat, and I am pretty sure Blue/Tenace followed by Evans/Bumbry are the two top vintage cards in this category.

Both Evans and Tenace have a chance of making the HOF from one of the era committees at some point, too...so we'll see. The list will evolve!

I don't see it. Tenace was real good but not a HoFer. I think a case could be made for Vida though.

I did see Vida during his Cy Young season at the ripe age of 21, he threw awfully hard. He sort of set the precedent for Dwight Gooden, spectacular start but didn't quite maintain it.

There are 18 catchers in the Hall of Fame.
By BB-R WAR, Tenace ranks 14th all time. Of the 13 names ahead of him, 11 are Hall of Famers. One more, Joe Mauer, likely will be (the other is Wally Schang, who is at #13 on the list). Two current players who are both considered likely Hall of Famers, Buster Posey and Yadier Molina, are 17th and 19th on the list. The .241 BA isn't pretty, but a .388 OBP for a catcher is darn impressive. He's borderline for sure, but a lot better candidate than may give him credit for. By comparison, Blue's WAR puts him 146th among starting pitchers. |

Multi-player rookie card? Check.
No Hall of Famers? Check. High total WAR? Check. |
