My opinion is the 52 topps jackie Robinson is undervalued. I know nothing compares to the 52 mantle - but if any card should - it’s this one.
Here’s why. The 1952 topps jackie Robinson is adjacent to the Mick on the high number printing sheet. Same classic set. About the same population in high grade (rare). Neither one is the “true rookie”. Both household names. Both hall of famers pictured while still in their youth. And also each card is just GORGEOUS. Granted, Jackie is not the same caliber of player that Mantle was- but nobody comes close to Jackie’s historical significance. There’s no number retired in all of baseball for anyone besides Jackie. And I think this significance will only continue to grow over time. Despite all that, it seems the 52 topps Jackie sells for about ten percent the price of a 52 topps Mantle. Check me on that but I think it’s about right on average. I don’t think they should be equal - but ten percent? Seems awfully low to me. My two cents. |

I like the sharper focus/registration of the card on the right. However, the print dot on his cap and the print speck that makes it look like he's got a booger in his right nostril are big detractors to me. So, to me, they both have nit-picky issues, I'd pay similar price for either if I were in the market.
If one is offered to me at 1/2 the price of the other, then my mind is made up ![]()

I much prefer the eye appeal of the SGC card. I'm just wondering if whoever bought this is thinking this is a candidate for crossing to PSA and doubling his money?
Obviously an expensive gamble and you'd be crazy not to put a minimum of PSA 8 in a crossover attempt. What are the chances this card was already reviewed by PSA and it didn't get an 8? I often wonder how many SGC graded cards didn't get the PSA grade somebody wanted so they got sent to SGC for a "second opinion". I'm not saying this card isn't deserving of an 8, I'm saying how many SCG high grade cards didn't get the result from PSA first and then ended up in a SGC holder? That's why I think the market "devalues" SGC in the same grade. Not that it's not deserving but that PSA didn't feel it was worthy otherwise it'd be in a PSA holder. Collectors enjoy seeing their collection worth more even if they're not planning on selling. Last edited by 1954 topps; 08-16-2021 at 04:38 PM. |

The back of the cards, in case people were interested in that type of thing.

I always do the 'ignore' approach. There are two cards being compared, but the reality is you're only going to buy one of them (whether it's these second mortgage Jackies or something else), so I'll look at the price tag and examine the individual card to see if the asking price is worth it. When a card sits alone without a doppleganger directly beside it, 99.999% of the 'issues' brought up here wouldn't be readily apparent. It's only the comparison that makes the spotlight burn brightly on them.

I preferred the card on the left. I'm guessing that if you swapped the holders, the results would have been the same.

It's a 6th year card of Jackie. Come on people.
