I decided I'd quit whining about prices and just go out and do what I could to finish off the '67 Topps SPs I needed. I managed to track down five of the seven in reasonable shape at decent (relatively) prices. A couple, Clendenon and Tommy John, are nice samples of tough cards and I got lucky on the eBay auctions. I'm down to Mike Shannon and the Rod Carew rookie. I've got bids in on a few Shannons. Hoping to continue my luck.

The best thing that's happened since I last hit this thread was finishing my '62 Post Cereal baseball set. At least I think I have. The last card, Gary Geiger, another hard-to-find SP, came from a source I'd never connected to vintage cards, Amazon.

Last Friday, after my weekly fishing for Geiger expedition on eBay I decided to widen my net a bit and just googled the card and clicked the Google shopping tab on the results. Geiger popped up ON AMAZON for about $8 plus shipping. I couldn't hit 'buy' fast enough. In all the years I've been buying cards online I've never considered Amazon as a place to check. I'm still not 100% sure the deal is real but Amazon says my order shipped Saturday. We'll see what happens.

Technically, I finished my 1972 Topps Baseball set on Friday, it's just a matter of waiting for everthing to arrive, about 17 cards from different sellers.

I've been working on a 70 Topps set as well, but that has progressed at a slower pace. I need 144 cards altogether, the majority between 460 - 680; 104 cards within these numbers to be exact. In addition I'm missing Bench, Munson, Rose, Gamble, many HOF All-Star cards, and the Pilots team card.

Not sure if I will make it on my 64 and 67 set but this 78 Topps set is a true happy set for me! What seems like small gains for some means the world to others. Thank you guys!!! 6 more cards! Enjoying seeing them in a binder. Thank you all.

Went to the National and picked up several cards for my 61 Topps baseball set. I am down to 5 cards to complete the set. Only 1 day at the show or I may have been able to complete there. So the search continues.

Received a fantastic 1978 Topps baseball complete set yesterday.

Working on the 1972 Topps set as well. Received 30 high number commons as well as a Bench, Aaron, and two additional 2nd series commons. Picked up 14 commons to finish the 1st series for the 1972 set.

I also like to add to each years set when I can with progressive proof cards. So I have a 1978 7-card progressive proof card set on its way and will also add the uncut team checklist card panel at a later date.

I just added a 1975 progressive proof set and am looking for the 1975 uncut team set if anyone has one, I am interested. (Unmarked)

I have my eyes on a 7-card progressive proof set for the 1972 Topps set that I will be adding sometime soon as well. And I believe the seller is a member here.

1950 Bowman is now at 70/252. All commons added lately (except for a Duke Snider SGC 5).

This will probably be a long process. It'd be easy to get these in grade 2-3, but not overpaying for mid-grade is going to take plenty of patience. Once you get in the trenches of building it, that's a bigger step up than you might've expected

Bob, this is good inspiration. My '67 set isn't much yet on the overall - just 113 out of 609, but that is up from about 80 cards total in March.

The SP highs I can see being quite a challenge, but luckily I'm in no hurry. I already have sprinkled in a decent mix of stars to keep me interested!

I've enjoyed the chase for the '67s. More than any other Topps set I've attempted, this one demands patience. Prices for the SPs are all over the map and I've both overpaid and underpaid depending on how elusive individual cards have been. The Colavito, for example, is just a bear to find with decent centering, at least it was for me. And I'm not a 'centering nut' by any means. But my usual rule...no part of another card can show', went out the window with Rocky.

After staring at the last hole in the binder a few weeks ago I tracked down the Carew rookie in raw form from a reputable dealer. I'm happy yo have it and to have put this thing to bed.

Good luck with your '67 quest. I's a wonderful set.

(Yes, there is border on the right side of this card, my scanner just sort of sux.

Based on what little I've seen, I would have to agree. Several years back before I decided I was working on the set - I briefly had a '67 Colavito. It was still nice enough, but way OC t/b. Should have hung onto that one...

Update on my 1963 Topps Peel-Off set is slightly over 50%. Have 26 of the 46. Mostly have commons but a few stars: Mays, Yaz and Brooks.

Interesting about the 1967 set. I completed mine around 1985. The last two cards I needed were #553 Yankees Rookies and the Colavito. Had been looking for a few years. (This was pre-internet).

Finally saw an ad for the Yankees Rookies and sent in my check. In the meantime, went to a large show up at the Meadowlands here in NJ. A dealer had the Colavito! Bought it and he also had the Yankees Rookies card so I bought that too.

Mike

Default 1977 Topps

Nothing too exciting, but I started a 1977 Topps build a couple of months ago. I am at about 85% completion at this point, just waiting on a couple of shipments to have the cards in hand. Pretty much down to the subsets (leaders, record breakers, brothers) and star cards but, thankfully, none of those are too outrageous.

I found a few more cards for my 1961 Topps baseball set. I need just two more to complete it. #575 Banks AS and 576 Maris AS.

I've had surprisingly good luck with Amazon. It doesn't happen often, but every once in a while I'll find a card I need for cheap on there.

Now, if only I had bought AMZN when my professor recommended it at $400...

Progress report for me. I've spent the last 6 months selling a bunch of stuff that I had no intention of keeping and really thinning out my collection, and now I am finally getting back into building sets and building my collection.

Current projects:

1953 Topps (raw set): 9/274 - I did pick up a really nice EXish Bolling, so I've already knocked off one of the 10 toughest cards in the set
1960 Topps (raw set): 45/573 - I'm building this in mid+ grade. Right now, every card is EXMINT or better and that is my goal. Piecing it together one by one using greg morris cards.
T206 Portraits Master Set: 39/1650 - Have a long long way to go here, lol

Non-Sports/Misc:

T29 Animals: 37/80 on the basic set, 37/160 on the master
T30 Arctic Scenes: 25/25 on the basic set, 26/50 on the master
T42 Birds (White Borders): 37/50 on the basic set, 37/550?? on the master
T42 Birds (Gold Borders): 49/50 on the basic set, 49/550?? on the master
T48 Butterflies: 37/50
T77 Lighthouses: 27/50 on the basic set, 34/100 on the master set
T118 Explorers: 3/25 on the basic set, 3/50 on the master set
1929 Churchman: 10/25

My projects:
1959 Topps 157/572
1963 Topps 63/576

I started working on both sets last year. I'm aiming for a VG-EX set for both years.

For my Dad:

1970 Topps 692/720
1971 Topps 615/752
1972 Topps 783/787
1973 Topps 352/660

These are the sets that my dad collected as a kid, so I'm trying to turn his duplicates into cards for these sets.

I just completed the 1973 baseball set. It took the better part of 6 years or so.

I bought the HoF's first with Schmidt being the first card I bought. $75 bucks for a sharp 5.5.

The last card I needed was #590 Deron Johnson.

Tough card to find centered, however I found one.

Most of my set is un-graded except for the HoF's.

The set is fairly well centered, but again, the cards are difficult in centered condition.

Iconic rookie card in Schmidt with the last cards of Mays and Clemente. The set is loaded with HoF's.

This was the first set I seriously collected as a kid. I loved those cards and while they are long gone, the past 6 years gave me an opportunity to be a kid again.

This set of cards will be with me for the rest of my life. They're my time machine.

Super impressive Bob...what percentish are graded? In awe of your posts on the 1953 Thread...

Finished a set today...1970 Topps. My birth year so a special year for me. My goal is to re-do the 60's sets and had no plan on doing a 1970. Got a great deal here on net54 about a year ago on a nice 70 lot, then got lucky at a local find with some really tight cards. Since then, just chipping away with no real focus and before I knew it was like 20 away. It was also a great way to upgrade my original set, it's now exmt+. Super cool to have 2 sets, and I'd call the new set VG/EX+ to EX with some EXMT. A few need upgrading from the inital lot, and that's the fun to fine tune...

Last card...#640 Al Kaline. A little OC, but sharp. First time I completed the set it was Johnny Bench, I got him early this time...
