Not only is that human nature (confirmation bias etc.) I'm not so sure that it's actually wrong thinking.

If a genuinely reputable party makes the same mistake as a less reputable party, and they both handle it in the same fashion, it still feels like the less reputable party might have been trying to get away with something and the more reputable party just made a mistake. Reputations are earned for a reason, and good ones confer the benefit of the doubt.
