By the way, the NYT obit on Mudcat referenced this 1968 SI Frank DeFord piece on Mudcat. If you haven't read the late DeFord you should treat yourself to one of his many books. The guy could plain write. Yes, I'm jealous!
I haven't read this piece yet BUT I am looking forward to it. I hope this cut and paste works. Enjoy.

Along with Gary Smith, the two best writers ever for SI, IMO.
