How rare are the variations in the set? Having the 7 variations (Master Set) is the set more valuable? TIA

A 1962 Topps Baseball master set has WAY more than seven variations. ETA, a 1962 Topps Baseball basic variation set may be considered to contain just the seven different pose and missing logo variations of Bob Buhl, Willie Tasby, Lee Walls, Carl Willey, Bill Hoeft, Bill Kunkel, and Hal Reniff but that would be bare bones. I don’t think any of those seven is overly rare or expensive. ETA again, oops, forgot about the Wally Moon and Ed Yost pose variations.

The '62 Topps master set (on the PSA registry) has an additional 14 cards if I'm not mistaken, not seven. The super set, on the other hand, has an additional 92 cards.
![]() The variations aren't rare, although there's obviously competition for them. For the most part, no card seems to be scarcer than it's counterpart. Here's yesterday's VCP for each of the variation pairs in PSA 7: 22 1st Series Checklist (#33-88 on back) 23 22 1st Series Checklist (#121-176 on back) 19 129 Lee Walls (Plain Jersey-Facing right) 12 129 Lee Walls (Pinstriped Jersey-Facing Left) 32 132 Los Angeles Angels Team (Inset Photos) 49 132 Los Angeles Angels Team (No Inset Photos) 15 134 Billy Hoeft (Blue Sky) 53 134 Billy Hoeft (Green Sky) 59 139 Hal Reniff (Portrait) 81 139 Hal Reniff (Pitching) 44 147 Bill Kunkel (Portrait) 16 147 Bill Kunkel (Pitching) 32 174 Carl Willey (With Cap) 31 174 Carl Willey (No Cap) 15 176 Eddie Yost (Batting) 14 176 Eddie Yost (Portrait) 16 190 Wally Moon (With Cap) 66 190 Wally Moon (No Cap) 26 192 3rd Series Checklist (177-264) (with ,) 18 192 3rd Series Checklist (177-264) 15 441 6th Series Checklist (430-506) (Large Print) 35 441 6th Series Checklist (430-506) (Small Print) 27 458 Bob Buhl (Plain Cap) 39 458 Bob Buhl (M on Cap) 35 462 Willie Tasby ("W" on Cap) 20 462 Willie Tasby (Plain Cap) 17 516 7th Series Checklist (White Boxes) 40 516 7th Series Checklist (Yellow Boxes) 54 Last edited by bobsbbcards; 05-21-2021 at 03:09 PM. |

Between the green tints and the variations the 62 set is a really fun set to chase.

Maybe because they were DPs, there are variants of all 7 checklists. And there are several recurring print defect differences in the set as well, the most interesting of which may be the different versions of Dick Hall's lip and face fungus. Question for you graded collectors, on an otherwise mint version of Hall's card would the fungus affect the grade ?

Thanks for all the help. I'm only short 6 cards from Bob's list. Can someone show me the difference between the small & large print versions of the 6th series checklist? TIA

Here you go Rich...
The card on the left is the one with "Checklist" in larger letters - the card on the right is the one with "Checklist" in smaller letters.

I still can't tell. Is this the small letters or large letters version? TIA
Here's a bigger pict: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7d47e5d6_b.jpg The other card I don't understand is #139 Babe hits 60 (pole/no pole). What pole?

Has anyone noticed this variation on the back of the 1962 Hobaugh card? The red/orange printing on back has bled a bit. The E in Ed really stands out. I looked online and found only one other like it.

You have to have the two different cards side by side to tell, there is a larger gap between the black box and the first C on the smaller letter version, and the smaller letter version is almost flush with the top of the black box and the furthest right point of the checkmark, the larger version letters are taller than the black box and the furthest right point of the checkmark.

That's the same type of defect as the 1957 GENE BAKEP print error, those are difficult to get recognized.

As I mentioned, all of the checklists can be found with differences of some kind, but not all have hobby recognition at this point

A cool recurring variation I discovered awhile back is the (non-Green-Tint) 'Woodling circle.' Here are three different ones showing the anomalous white circle in the sky...
