Morris Webster "Lefty" Martin (September 3, 1922 – May 24, 2010) had a ten-year career in the majors, but his backstory is very interesting. A member of the First Army 49th Combat Engineers, Martin saw action in North Africa and was also part of the D-Day landing in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He suffered shrapnel wounds in his hand and frostbite in his feet, but in 1945, in Bonn, Germany, he was shot in the leg and the wound became infected. Thankfully a nurse discovered that Martin was a baseball player, and she convinced the doctors to treat Martin with a new experimental drug called penicillin rather than amputate his leg. The penicillin worked and thanks to that kind nurse, Martin went on to enjoy a respectable MLB pitching career, playing for seven different teams. The decorated World War II veteran lived to the age of 87 and passed away in 2010.
