I believe the Necco baseballs were either gum or candy shaped like a baseball with sayings on them much like the sweethearts. All of the mom and pop stores in and around Boston carried most of their products. I remember seeing Skybars, Clark bars, Mary Janes, Banana Split candy and of course the teethwrecker Necco Wafers. The company had its headquarters on Mass Ave in Cambridge near MIT. Their smokestack was painted like a roll of Necco wafers. They also made mini baseball pennants with team names on them.

This was a rather interesting candy Necco sold. Apparently their candy came in a variety of shapes.

A small image, but here it isNecco_factory_water_tower.jpg
Their products are still featured in many movies. Those small hearts with sayings on them are a product of NECCO (New England Confectionary Company). The location of the factory may explain why so many MIT students are crazy. They were on a constant sugar high as the factory was operating 24 hours a day and the fumes engulfed the campus. I am sure all of the wild stunts by the seniors every year can be traced back to that.
