Default 1926-27 Aguilitas Adolpho Luque

Dolf Luque

Adolpho D. "Dolf" Luque. Pitcher for four MLB teams betwen 1914-1935. 194 wins and 29 saves in 20 MLB seasons. 2-time World Series champion -- 1919 (Cincinnati) and 1933 (New York Giants). MLB wins leader in 1923. 2-time MLB ERA leader. Member of the Cincinnati Reda Hall of Fame. Member of the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame and one of Cuban baseball's most famous figures.

Luque was known to have a temper. While with the*Brooklyn Dodgers, a heckler in the stands hollered "Lucky Luque! Lucky Luque!" repeatedly. Luque went over to the dugout and told manager*Wilbert Robinson, "I tell you, Robbie, if this guy don't shut up, I'm gonna shut him up." "Aw, come on, Dolf", said the manager. "He paid his way in—let him boo." Just then the heckler spotted the rotund Robinson and yelled, "Hey, fat belly!" Robinson said, "OK, Dolf—go ahead and clobber the jerk." Luque obliged his manager's request.

I like that the card manufacturer decided to include his marital status in the writeup.

The card has really interesting late at night flash photography, and the 'from above' perspective is pretty unique too!

Thank you. I am pretty sure this is the same card I bought raw from Lew Lipset at a Willow Grove show 30+ years ago (along with a similarly nice looking T227 Baker). I think it was $200 a card. Years later I had it graded and then sold it when I was raising money to buy an apartment. I bought it back a few years ago (it was reholdered at some point in between, I don't think they had the PSA stickers when I had it graded).

Anyway, here's a another birthday boy, Mickey Doolan/Doolin.

And here is today's birthday boy: Ed./Edd Rousch/Roush. My scanner does not work well with the thicker SGC cases, so I am cheating and using the REA scans from their last auction.

Michael, I won this card and a like-graded Baker in a Barry Sloate auction. Also, had, about the same time, a PSA 6 Cobb purchased from SportsCards Plus. I believe it is still the highest graded example. All were auctioned off by Mastro around 2005. Sure wish I had them now.

That makes total sense. I am friends with Barry and used to consign cards to him.

Edited to add that John's comment and my reply make more sense in the context of my later post about the card:
