I don't find that card attractive or interesting. On the other hand, I don't see how it's disrespectful. My own collection is 90+% vintage, but I have seen a few new cards I admire. I'm not willing to pay the freight for it, but I thought this one was very cool...

I agree that I don’t see this as being disrespectful and I echo the comment that at least no actual vintage item was destroyed to make the card. It's more a matter of whether this is the kind of thing you like.

If you want to see something disrespectful, look what someone did to an actual card. They took a 1990 Topps #2 Nolan Ryan (worth almost $1) and made it into a vaguely humorous piece of sort-of art. And then someone bought it and gave it to me because I often hum this song and they know I like baseball cards. And now I display it on my bookshelf because, while I do not collect modern cards, I think it is kind of funny.

The fact that there are new cards being made that you don’t like, or are being sold in a way you don't like, should not affect your enjoyment of the part of the hobby you do like. As long as there is no deceit involved, I try not to get too worked up about what someone else is buying or selling.

The card the OP posted is not my cup of tea either so I will not be buying it…along with not buying millions of other cards available for sale (except for hopefully a couple of the cheaper ones in the Heritage auction).

In my best old man voice: "Ehhh....These young whipper-snappers have disrespected the honorable Honus Wagner, the greatest shortstop to ever field a ground ball and the holy grail of our cardboard worship. Who do they think they are? What's next, a color photo of the Babe?? Mr. Cobbs texting on an iphone? Today's kids wouldn't know a ballplayer from a buggy whip."

BTW, those Dr. J and Rapid Robert cards are cool, man.

A color photo of the Babe is possible, even if one probably doesn't exist.
A color film of the Babe is also just barely possible, and also probably does not exist. (Oddly, a color photo would be possible of nearly all baseball players, although it didn't become common enough until the late 30's

Cobb would probably be using an I phone today, and would probably be texting about how he invested in these things back when they were the size of a shoebox and only made phone calls.

You know, I think there actually is some color film of the Babe in HBO's "When it was a Game" DVDs, though it's post-career. So disrespectful.

I think the real purpose here is to introduce these great players of the past to this new generation of collectors...sometimes you need to do it in a way that they will connect.

I don't think the card is so disrespectful as it, and other cards from the set are not really aesthetically appealing, nor what I'm into when it comes to collecting cards. I don't think they're an addition to the card canon, as it were. There are some modern cards, like the Feller posted above, that are really nice.

As far as "doing what it takes" to appeal to a younger generation, to me, doing something like this is talking down to prospective fans and/or collectors. Same thing with much about the game itself today, from the way the players dress, to 7-inning games and the 3-batter rule. I won't go into changes that I think could help the game, as it is off-topic.

Nothing wrong with an artist wanting to draw or paint something like this. I just would never want one.
