Default For those of you that are bored.

Just got new information on the 2021 Topps Transcendent issue coming out. I know that none of you guys give a crap, but I thought I'd let you know that many of the cards are 1 of 1. What else is new. But the Price is really cheap at over $20,000 a box and only 50 boxes will be made. Can't wait to NOT buy it. Who does buy this crap?

Interesting topic. Manufactured rarity is making more millionaires in the hobby daily, so it seems. Just not my cup of tea. Probably folks in their 20s and 30s who have made a lot of money?
I don't know but this one is rare..

They have been nice cards, and although I'll never be a purchaser of a box, I have purchased a couple of Ripkens for my collection.

Which do you think is/was more difficult for Topps, producing this set with so many "unique" cards (assuming all signed with matching equipment inserted) or producing 1,000,000,000 of each card in 1987? Also which do you think was more profitable for Topps?

I understand the logic at Topps, just don't understand it in the buyers.

The buyers are breakers who sell spots to gamblers hoping to be the one to get the cut auto or another big card.

Like you, I've never purchased a box, but I picked up some Mike Trout Transcendent VIP Party cards. The regular box this year is limited to 50 boxes with each box containing 46 Autographs, 1 Sketch, 1 VIP Invitation per box. So that translates to almost $500 per card.
What's the invite to the VIP party worth? It's hard to say exactly. Per Topps, the party features "a myriad of unique at-event gifts, meet-and-greets with enshrined greats, and other once-in-a-lifetime baseball-themed experiences."
I think a lot of attendees probably end up selling the cards received at the VIP party to help offset the cost of the original box. The VIP Party cards are limited and offer some nice alternatives to the regular cards available.

I guess I'm in. Just have to hit Craig's List and find someone to remove one of my kidneys at a nicely discounted rate.

I totally agree; me either. I do wonder if collectors have actually been able to make back the original "price of admission" by selling the cards they aren't really as interested in. If you ended up with some nice cards for your collection and got to attend the VIP party, maybe it would be worth it in the long run. You just couldn't be in a hurry to get back the original investment.

I think it's a nice product, ridiculously overpriced however. I believe the boxes also come with an invitation to some sort of party, hosted by topps.

For 20K I'd rather buy something else, though I supposed if I was a millionaire I'd purchase it.

Default Leon's Stereoscopic card depicts Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, NH

Hi Leon,

Your stereoscopic card or stereograph shows a Kimball Union Academy baseball team from Meriden, NH, which is 13 miles from Darmouth College. One of my friends from college went there.

Hoping someone will buy it, and offer it in shares on collectable, only to have someone buy it for more, rinse and repeat.

The Transcendent set has a huge following. The party is pretty tremendous I hear. Every year they get a hot sh*t player like Ohtani or Harper to be the face of it. Private party where the player comes and makes the rounds posing for photos and signing a bunch of personalized stuff. If you are massive fan of one of these guys, obviously a once in a life experience. Spend the 20k, and try to resell as much of the other stuff as you can. I heard the swag alone they give you is worth a few thousand.

Obviously folks here will scoff at at it. But the older I've gotten the more I've come to treasure experiences over things. I met one of my heroes at the national a few years ago on a total lark and it was a lot more meaningful to me personally than the 145 tables of cards I walked past.

As a business owner, I can't blame Topps for doing something that works. Are they supposed to release cheap junk wax, or adapt to the market? I would dread the news that they failed like so many other heritage businesses have. If this vertical market pursuit pays off for them then great.

Agree, but I wish standard Topps flagship price would stabilize and decline. Last year jumbo packs were $36!

Since it appears that I live in a cave - I had No Idea what the heck these were so I had to take a look -

Couple of Observations:

Looks like there are about 1300 of these (Transcendents) currently for sale on FeePay

Prices are all over the board

Looks like no one that is selling these actually owns a scanner (really odd) - Everything posted is using cell phone photos

This one (below) currently posted at $9932 (with Free Shipping tho)

Leon - that is a "stereoscope" card Yes? If so then you are 1 old dude

Very nice card, though...

I wonder if the question on the back of the card is any indication to the level of baseball knowledge Topps expects of their targeted market?

I wish they'd put some effort into each year's base set. For the past several years now, it looks like they let the interns play with photoshop call it a day. I get that they have an exclusive license but still; they still put out some nice sets from 1956-1980, the last time they had a monopoly.
