Default SOLD Walter Johnson Estate Rookie Photo Type 1 Trimmed from RPPC

SOLD. Shipping and insurance included. From the Walter Johnson estate, with LOA from Henry W. Thomas, Johnson's grandson and biographer. This beautiful 3"x2" oval portrait of the 19 year-old rookie Walter Johnson in his 1907 Washington road uniform was trimmed from an RPPC and pasted by Mrs. Johnson into a collage of photos for display at a banquet commemorating her husband's ascension to the managership of the Washington Nationals ballclub in 1929. A thin crease runs across this stunning image of the young Walter Johnson, otherwise the condition of the photo is excellent and the clarity of the image itself superb. Paste residue on the back. An historic, one-of-a-kind representation of the pitcher many experts consider to be the greatest ever at the very beginning of his spectacular big league career. This photo was used by Henry W. Thomas in his award-winning biography, "Walter Johnson: Baseball's Big Train."

I know, the mind boggles--and cringes--at the idea of somebody taking scissors to the original to create this one, and for what conceivable purpose? As you know, though, there's always a story, and maybe a coffee spill had already ruined most of the original. Who knows? I don't believe Hazel Johnson, a faithful archivist of his material, would have done it just to make a cute little oval she could paste onto the collage, I don't think she would ruin a much nicer photo just to do that. I'm guessing HE did it for some purpose--maybe to carry in his wallet--while still a youngster, and it came down to her that way. It does seem to be addressed to him in Fullerton, something I hadn't realized before seeing it blown up in this post.
