I love the write-up on the back as well. It captures exactly how well he showed up on the biggest stage when he finally got the chance. Legend. Last edited by Mutton Chop Yaz; 03-05-2021 at 09:10 AM. |

No kidding. Led the league in RBI and batted .458 in the WS as a 32-year-old 2nd year player! Have you picked up a Doby yet?

Thanks, Matthew, I'm glad I managed to win the Reese. I agree that the 52 Doby is a nice card. I have a low grade example and need to upgrade. Here was a nice one that I was thinking about bidding on the other day. Other than the border chip, it was a blazer.

Great pickups everyone. Love looking at people's purchases/trades. I got this today at my LCS out of a $1 box. Didn't know anything about it, but I knew it looked old (they had other teams as well like Yankees, Reds, Red Sox, etc, but this is the only one I picked up).
Anyway, I think it's a 1961 Fleer Double Bubble, although Beckett doesn't list that brand when typing in 1961 Fleer. So not sure. But still a cool find, especially for $1. ![]()

Speaking of early integrators, these three have arrived in the past few days. The Paige speaks for itself, of course, but let's focus on the Doby and the Irvin for a minute. Such beautiful cards. Irvin has that classic early/mid-20th century follow-through pose from when hitters were taught to "swing down on the ball" and lunge out onto their front foot. A lot of Goudeys and earlier cards have that same pose.
The Doby...what amazing, vivid colors. It's odd, because Topps apparently kept the Cleveland color scheme and cap in the head shot, while the background shot and the team designation reflected his trade to the White Sox. The card is definitely better for it, though - the red and blue add so much. |
