My 2 Dizzy's.

My great Uncle Sam was friends with Dizzy Trout back in the day. Here he is with my Uncle Sam getting his picture taken with his other friend, Norm, alongside Mickey Mantle at the 1958 World Series.

Great picture. You should tell people that the kid in the bottom, left corner is you.

Dizzy Trout, Sid Bream, Catfish Hunter, Lip Pike, Kevin Bass, Tim Salmon. Lots of fishy baseball names.

You are telling me names I can't fathom. So I called Kip Addotta for the halibut, and he said it was too deep for him too.

Well, it's 12:17 here.

My 3 Lou Kretlow cards.

Al, this is what I wrote you about. Notice the 3 different colored fronts.
The raw black back one has a Peach look to it.
I was under the assumption that the black back variations only had yellow fronts and the orange fronts were strictly the red back variations?

In hand, there is a distinct difference, imo, between all 3.
In this black back link however, you can see some with different looking fronts so it takes away the possible fading explanation, imo.

My black back Kretlow looks like it is the same color as your raw one. Which front color do you think is more common, the raw one or the graded one?

I have no idea to be honest, Jay?

I was under the believe that there were only 2 different variations of this card; a yellow front/black back and an orange front/red back, but as you can see in this link, black back versions have both, or all 3 colored fronts.

Thanks for clearing that up, Al.

Like I wrote above, I thought there were only 2 variations of this card so it was confusing to me when I seen and obtained my Peach colored copy.
Do you have a link/site for that H&S super set?

I've thought about sending my entire set to PSA to be graded. Anyone ever done that with a set? What would all 407 cost?

All right, I am back in the game. Here is my 43 Scarborough.

Grading costs about $10 a card for commons right? And there is a scale for the higher priced cards, so you pay about 10% of the value of the card. So maybe $5 to $6k to get everything graded?

Scarborough is on the H&S super set list for 3 version, which include an orange and beige version of his black back. Have never found two sufficiently different black back to add to my set. Maybe such a difference will show up here.

I do have two red backs with slightly different front coloring but not enough to viewed as recurring variants

Carry on....

Al, the H&S list shows 4 variations of Scarborough. For the red back, it says Peach and Lt Peach. Are those the 2 different ones you have?

For black backs, it says yellow and peach not orange and beige, or are we looking at different lists?

Almost any Mantle this day and age runs one a $1,000 alone to have graded. Throw in a decent Robinson, Mays and Mathews, to name a few, at todays values, and the cost increases exponentially.

My bad Dale. Here are my two black backs

What I have not found is a difference in the "peach", light v regular, on the reds. Minor color differences in scans on ebay are often influenced by lighting or the quality of the scan/scanner. Thyis is my red, does anyone have a red with lightewr or darker peach ?

For PSA, if card value is $2500-5K, it's $200 for grading, if card value is $5K-10K, it's $500 for grading, $10K-25K it's $1000 for grading and $25K-50K is $2000 so as Dale said, it adds up for the Mantle, Mathews, Mays and Robinson these days.

Con Dempsey is the first Phillies card we have posted, and it is one of the first 1952 Topps cards I purchased. When I got back into collecting in the mid 90s, I was fortunate that my mother had not thrown out my childhood collection, so I still had all my Topps sets starting from 1975 and on. I first decided I wanted to put together sets going back to 1968, the year I was born. Once I finished those, being a lifelong Phillies fan, I decided to collect all the Phillies cards from the Topps sets going back to 1951 so the start of my 1952 set was all of the Phillies in the set. I eventually moved on to putting together all of the Topps sets, then Bowmans, and continue to find new sets to work on now.
