Soaking a prewar card to remove album paper, attached with a water-based paste, is an entirely different ballgame than removing tape from a modern card. I do not think you can do it yourself without damaging the card and it’s value. However, there are professionals that will do it for a fee.
If you attempt it, please take pictures and document the experience. Good luck. |

Don't even try. The most you will get is to remove the tape itself but the stain will be there no matter what.

I've never had any luck removing old tape completely. It's possible to get the cellophane off, but the glue residue will remain and stay sticky. I have a 59 Common that was entirely taped over. Homemade lamination....
![]() It now stays in a penny sleeve despite being pretty beat. Otherwise it would stick to other cards. |

Even with things more minor than that, every time I've ever tried to "fix" an unnatural problem like that on a vintage card, I've wound up making the situation worse. I would leave as-is and appreciate the card for something that was well-loved.
