PWCC then lists the same card, but this one is graded a PSA 7.5, and it ends up selling for $3,400 USD.

Everybody goes insane and starts looking for Fred's PSA 8. The first person who finds it clicks on the BIN button.

Somebody will immediately put his PSA 8.5 up for $6,000 USD. Another guy will put his PSA 9 for $15,000 USD, etc. And yes, these cards will end up selling as well!

This is the power of PWCC.
Likely a spot on summation.

Especially in 2020. This market is f***ing nuts without the PWCC factor.

The PWCC factor isn't reality and a big manipulator from a data point perspective. I won't turn this into a PWCC bashing thread, as there are plenty of those on the pre-war baseball forum. But sometimes the market follows the above scenario, sometimes it doesn't.

I'm patient and will wait out the bubble. Vintage hockey is rightfully catching up. But, I believe we'll see a correction to the modern stuff at some point. Gretzky and Lemieux may be an exception.

What is your definition of the starting point for modern?

1980 is my definition. I know some have a different perspective.

I can definitely respect that as the line of demarcation. I would personally consider cards from the 80s to no longer be "modern" these days.

We're in the same neighborhood, though. To some new collectors, a Crosby rookie would be vintage and 90s cards would be ancient.

To me, 1981 feels like the start of modern, probably because in baseball 1980 was the last year of Topps only. So in hockey, Messier vintage, Lemieux modern.

That PSA 10 Gretzky sale sent shockwaves across the hockey card market. Now the Lemieux is going crazy and others will follow. We will definitely see a correction sometime in the future because prices are just ridiculous right now. However, we won't see the pre-pandemic prices again.
