I certainly respect peoples right to make their own decisions. My take based on the most current information is 1) Yes, cases seem to be increasing in a lot of places - in part because of poor use of PPE 2) The mortality rate is actually materially decreasing - at its height I believe it was somewhere around 3-4% of those infected, currently down to about 1%. In a majority of those cases there was comorbidity. So, if you are in the higher risk age range and/or have prexisting comorbid factors like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabtetes, etc. then I believe it is a wise decision to wait. I am healthy, not in the highest risk age range, choose to properly use ppe and am REALLY looking forward to being at a show!

If Joe, Rick and the guys at CSA seemed to be taking a laissez-faire attitude toward the whole thing I think I would've passed. Since they are taking it as seriously as I would if I were attempting a live event, I thought I'd go, taking every precaution I could. I will be sanitizing my hands after each transaction, changing masks each day (at least) and will be asking people at my booth to please take things seriously as well.

Very true. Here are the new CDC morality/survival rate numbers for the United States based on age group:

0-19 years - 99.997%
20-49 years - 99.8%
50-69 years - 99.5%
70+ years - 94.56%

Obviously, the rate significantly increases at 70 years or older (5% spike), and individuals in that age group need to take extra precautions. However, unless you have concerning pre-existing conditions, mortality rates for earlier ages are fairly consistent with the standard influenza flu. Self awareness for utilizing appropriate PPE & social distancing are critical and after speaking with Joe, I am confident CSA will be taking all of the necessary precautions.

I have a general question, I'm asking here because I'm planning to attend this show and have never traded bigger cards at a show. I own a 1953 Mantle in a PSA 1. I would really like to upgrade to a 2-4, and would like to trade my card plus cash to make up the difference. Are sellers often receptive to doing deals like this? If I bring my card to the show, what's the likelihood that I'm able to make a deal? Thanks.

Hard to say exactly how likely it is to make a deal but it’s certainly possible. I’m taking a sgc 3 cobb red portrait in hopes I can upgrade in a similar manner that you laid out.

That is a tough question, as a dealer, I dont like to trade down. At shows, alot of times somebody will offer a lessor graded card for a higher grade. I usually say no to the proposal, unless the person offers his card at a price where I know I can make a few bucks and the cash offer works out. Also depends on what the card looks like for the grade.

Of course you can make deal, but be advised that if you do, you will not “get a deal”. Dealers are in it to make money. So, if presented with that opportunity, they may accept a trade plus cash. In my experience, many dealers will value their card at market and then value your card at less than market and ask for cash to make up the shortfall. While I hate this; I understand and respect it. They want to sell a card for $X. You have a card worth less than $X, which is a lesser card, and you are willing to put in cash. They want to get their $X out of the card they are selling and if they are going to take back a lesser card, then they need to make money on that too- bc it’s more work and it would have been easier to just sell the card for $X or even a bit less than $X.

I take cards with me all the time to shows. I have sold some and I have traded some - sometimes to other show attendees. But the dealer almost always get the better end, which is fine. For this reason, take cards of yours that have appreciated.

One side note - there is a room full of collectors, most of whom are attendees and not dealers, but all of whom can be trade partners. Make connections and see if you can make deals with attendees, there or more likely down the line. Just do not do that in front a dealer’s booth, as thats poor form to cut deals with someone else in a dealer’s own shop
