Nice Johnson's David! And thanks for some of the cards here.

Recent pickups the last couple weeks or so; sometimes the back is better than the front. Choynski is rough, but knocks me up to 47/50 on the Tolstoi's.

Nice cache of cards. I added a few premiums from the British periodical Boxing, ranging from 1909-1914. All three show Fred Welsh; the last one includes Willie Ritchie.

Default New Johnson and intro to the forum

Not sure how desirable or scarce this is, but I took a risk at a best offer and happy with the outcome. Just ordered Adam's book so I can educate myself better. Lifelong prewar baseball collector(35 years) but my passion is in contact sports so why not collect them. I have wrestled, practiced many different types of grappling and mixed martial arts in the Marines into my late 30's. I only played baseball to my sophomore year in high school Going to sell my bb cards and have fun on this side for awhile.

Some from the last week or two, sadly these 3 were imprisoned but quickly liberated. The Choysnki silver doesn't belong in a SGC 3 holder anyways, as the card is significantly short and probably trimmed.

Starting to get into the British issues more as well (thank you davidl, for making me jump across the pond for my boxing fix now!). The Silvers keep stacking up.

Wait till you catch the bug for the rest of the world's cards. You'll find yourself waiting breathlessly for deliveries from places like Venezuela, Singapore and Ukraine, and chasing obscure cards of Argentinean club fighters that even the boxer's mom doesn't care about.

These guys are coming from Australia. I opted for terrible miscut and the kid. Overpaid at $60 apiece?

As Greg mentioned, I’m a big fan of those old British cards. The 1911 Boys’ Friends Jack Johnson cards are relatively rare. Not super scarce but much rarer than the Ogden’s Pugilists or the T218s. If I’m not mistaken, they were issued in panels of three boxers and hand cut. There’s only three cards to the set. Below is an example of what the three look like.

I’m not sure about those Australian cards as I don’t think I’ve ever seen them except from the seller you got yours from. Cool though.

... and keeping with the spirit of this thread, here’s some nice additions to my Jeannette collection!

The Oz cards are 1922 Davies & Herbert Newcastle Boxers. Not an easy issue to find but one seller has been offering a brick of them in various permutations for quite some time on eBay. The only big name is Les Darcy.

So here's how you know you spend too much time on this stuff. eBay seller listed this snapshot as a pair of boxers ca. 1910.

I knew immediately:

--The shot is from a professional photographer: he was standing on the ring apron

--The shirtless boxer is Jack Dempsey

--The big guy in the wife-beater is 6'6" tall Big Bill Tate, Dempsey's sparring partner.

--The location is Toledo, Ohio.

--The date is June or July 1919.

--The event was Dempsey training to fight Jess Willard.

The snapshot has a matte finish and nice silvering.
