David, what you posted seems like good news indeed, and everyone wants to go back to normal (I am soooo over this and would give anything to have it end). But this is a baseball card forum, and as such, serves as a small escape from the craziness of the day. To that end, perhaps non-direct/off topic statements (especially regarding coronavirus) should be reserved for the water cooler section. Just a friendly suggestion, not intended to be a shot or inflammatory.

I thought you guys would find it encouraging that some news came out that increases our chances of getting back to normal and going to a card show.

I would like to go to the National and I hope it takes place and unless we get some good news like this there is no shot it will.

For anyone who is hoping to go this is a glimmer of hope and more importantly a glimmer of hope for the well being of the world.

I dig and the info is good, but this thread/section just is not the place.

Meanwhile, I hope the National is still on; I would go (if my wife let me). But, I will bet dollars to dimes that there is no National this year.

You guys are a special bunch.

The idea that posting news that increases the chances it might take place is bad is beyond me.

Whatever.

As I understand it, this is a potential TREATMENT for sick people. If they are very sick in the hospital. Correct me if I’m wrong. Are you going to go to the National because someone says to you “hey, if you do get really sick and have to be hospitalized for a few weeks, there is now a good drug to treat you”. Uh, not me. I’ll avoid getting it altogether. Thanks. AIDS and Ebola have great treatment drugs. I don’t want them either.

The only way to get back to normalcy is a treatment.

This drug is curing people who are in really bad shape. Not the minor cases.

No one wants to get this thing but the only way the economy recovers is if there is a way to not lose lives due to this outbreak and this gives people confidence to go out in public.

There are countless pharmaceutical companies working day and night trying to get us to the other side of this issue.

Plenty of people on this board make their living from trading cards and they need public interaction to return and disposable income to exist to maximize their business opportunity. There is a reason the stock market is cheering and the futures are exploding higher.

Here don't believe me.

One of the top market analysts for years.

“An effective treatment is a huge deal and would create a path to open the economy and resume normal ‘social activities’ way sooner than a vaccine,” said Tom Lee, head of research at Fundstrat Global Advisors. “A treatment is safer and more scalable because it is only given to people who need to be treated.”

Thanks for the update and stock tip.

Will not speak for others but I live this threat every day. I am very motivated to stay up to date. I do not need some jerkoff telling me directly or indirectly how to respond to an off topic response, especially a hostile one, that is taking away from a hobby and diversion I truly need to stay sane.

Go away.

Haha

You guys are something else.

I will sleep better tonight knowing the medical world is hard at work at trying to keep me safe and make it possible for me to get back to a normal life.

I honestly can't stop laughing at these responses. Your sacred board. LOL

Relaxing the restrictions early is a bad idea.

What are the side effects? Is it really curing people or are they recovering on their own? Does it cause more good or harm in the long run? We have science and doctors that will determine if this is really the one or if it is something else being developed by someone else. It also isn't something that we will know in a few weeks or even months. I have cancelled plans to go to AC even if the show is a go. I will let science tell me when I can return to normal not any posts on a message board. Until then I will follow the CDC guidelines.

The way to get back to normalcy is to eliminate the possibility of a continuing or recurring pandemic. A treatment for people already gravely ill doesn't achieve that because it does nothing to lessen the number of cases. The only thing that achieves that end is to build herd immunity and the only ways to do that is either vaccinations or everyone getting the disease and not dying from it.

Well, if I want to understand matters of disease and public health, the first person I would talk to is a guy who wants to sell me stock in the pharmaceutical company.

In all seriousness, one of my virologist friends does think that remdesivir does show good potential, but is cautious in pumping it up as some miracle cure until the results from a number of clinical trials is available. And the Gilead results are very preliminary. I found a good article about the trial results that seems to take on the proper tone. Hopeful, but clear in that there is still a long way to go. And, for anyone familiar with the design of experiments, there is some language in there that will temper your enthusiasm. For example:
Mullane, while encouraged by the University of Chicago data, made clear her own hesitancy about drawing too many conclusions.

“It’s always hard,” she said, because the severe trial doesn’t include a placebo group for comparison.

I think most people will not listen to what these show promoters are saying. They are not going to attend any shows this year, period! When thousands of people around you are getting sick and dying, are you seriously going to take that risk - over sports cards?

This year is EFFED! See you all in 2021!
