Got my bids in right after noon. In most cases, I was the first one. By the time I was finished 30k worth of bids became 11k - only winning on 6 right now. I think that is a record.

People who collect 1914 and 1915 CJs must think they're dreaming right now. Between REA and LOTG there must be 500 auctions or more on individual cards. WOW.

Well-a, beat the drum and hold the phone,
The catalog came out today.
We're born again, there's new cards up for sale.
A-roundin' third, and headed for home,
It's a giant horde of baseball cards,
Anyone can understand the way I feel.

Ooohh --
Put me in coach, I'm ready to bid today
Put me in coach, I'm ready to bid today
Look at me, I can be, winning bidder.

Interesting feedback.

There was a spirited thread on the stock market's impact on cards and it seems this would not be what most would expect to hear.

Now winning 0

I was pushing the button with trepidation and fear. While I wanted to get bids in early and make sure that I still got a catalog in the future, I also only have about $30,000-$40,000 in cash on my outside of what I have in the market (and don't want to sell low to get cash!) So, while I would have loved to get a PSA 2.5 52 Mantle for $2500 and didn't think I would, I also had a fear that there would be no competition and I would win everything and burn up my cash reserves in a crisis.

Gotcha so these were very conservative bids.

This card is probably immune. Already at 200k.

A quick glance at the top items and they seem to be getting pumped up pretty quick.

I don't know that REA is really reflective of the hobby as a whole or most people's situation, however. There aren't a whole lot of sub $500 (or even $1,000 cards) cards getting sold at REA each auction.

I check EBAY all throughout the day for cards listed and cards sold in my genre. There has been a shocking number of cards sold over the past few days at great prices.

Maybe it will slow but some how it has accelerated.

I continue to believe people want to own cards and will find a way to buy them.

I think prices realized are remaining strong, mainly for 3 reasons...

1. People have much more time on their hands. That means more time to search and peruse ebay and the catalogue auctions. We cannot go anywhere, and all of our purchases can easily be done on-line. So the temptation to buy is greater than ever.

2. Cards and memorabilia are a welcome diversion from the awful crisis that's hitting us. It's a comfort zone we can create, which serves to shelter us from the awful coronavirus news and events. It's a warm and fuzzy escape.

3. We are spending far less money on restaurants, bars, entertainment, concerts, movies, plays and sporting events. It's easy to estimate that many of us are saving a couple thousand dollars a month in entertainment alone. Many of us who are still ok financially are spending these "would be" entertainment dollars on cards and memorabilia.

Of course this could all change as the economy worsens and more jobs are lost. Nobody knows what the future holds, or how long this is liable to drag on. Card prices could plummet if the quarantines extend into the 3rd or 4th quarter. Only time will tell...
