This is very true. I like to scan the cards for myself to look at and not any ridiculous "registry".

My question is, can you use one of those good scanners as an all in one printer, so I can also use it for work when my HP takes a dump?

As I am using PSA exclusively to authenticate my collection the PSA registry seems like the logical place to archive it. Am slowly upgrading it until it gets to a price point that it no longer makes sense. With all of the front/back rarities it also seemed like a good idea to have it all in one easy to use space

I am not aware of an "all in one" machine that uses a CCD scanner image sensor to properly scan graded cards.

Default Scanning update

bought an Epson V600 yesterday and have it up and running. Per someone else's suggestion I have been scanning with the lid which seems to be working I've also been using 300 dpi resolution...is that sufficient? Any other settings that I should navigate to improve my results?

I would say to get it right to your liking first, before scanning a bunch. Determine one setting and stick with it.
