A few people have asked about the best way to store vintage pennants (provided you aren't going to hang them, and/or have limited space...)
I use these Bins, which can be bought at Target, Home Depot, etc. Without measuring, they are roughly 36" long X 15" wide X 8" high. So they can slip under a bed frame, if so desired. They are often sold as Wrapping Paper Containers. If you get the right ones, you can go both directions, and fit 2 stacks of pennants. They also have a small "well" which circles the perimeter of the bottom. This can be used for adding cedar balls, which deter insects and moths (see pics below...) This is the most secure and best way that I have found to store pennants. Hope it's helpful! |

I'm not into pennants but noticed this one on American Pickers tonight. It was hanging on a motorcycle they showed a picture of when Mike was negotiating a motorcycle deal in a guys garage.

That's a sweet pennant. Thanks for sharing that image. I wonder if any of those have survived the past 100 years..?
Is the illustration of a baseball player wielding a bat ... or an iron worker holding some steel?

So I looked back through the thread trying to find the info on how to re-color a pennant and had no luck. Can someone point me in the right direction or just message me privately.

Anyone ever see this particular pennant before? Came in a huge early Mets collection loaded with yearbooks, Miracle Mets NLCS and WS Stubs, autographs and more. I can find similar pennants but no exact matches.

Same here... I've seen many similar Mets Pennants and lots of 1969 variations. But never that specific one.
I bet that a lot of street vendors made these up in a hurry, to accommodate the Parade/Celebration, or simply wanted to take advantage of the euphoria surrounding New York at the time. It does not look like one that would be sold inside of Stadiums. Probably a very limited (or one-time) production run for this one. So how does that translate to price/value? I have no idea, but wouldn't expect it to be a "blockbuster" item. I guess we won't know until auction time... and that's what makes some of this unique memorabilia so much fun. Nifty Pennant! Thanks! I agree with your analysis and would propose it had a very short print run/shelf-life since they went on to win the World Series. Certainly wouldn't keep producing this one when a week later they were world champs!

Shiver me timbers, you must be hittin' the rum! Are ye trying to hornswaggle me, Matey? You want to pillage me prized booty for a lousy 500 doubloons, ya bilge rat? I'd sooner walk the plank than surrender me buried treasure to a scurvy dog like you. You'd best up yer ante, or you'll be feedin' the fishes, yo ho ho. I think ye should know that dead men tell no tales! Nothing quite like that oversized Pittsburgh Pennant, to bring out the inner Pirate in ye! What a beauty... and can't believe there's such a good photo of it in its heyday. I just hope that motorcyclist didn't let it drag on the ground! ![]() Last edited by perezfan; 02-11-2020 at 11:09 AM. |

I'm thinking that color scheme makes it more likely a University of Pittsburgh baseball pennant than a Pittsburgh Pirates...Arrrr.
