Jay, I was trying to show an un-faded Australian type font like he has on there. I may have some in my collection, but he already had some scanned on there...Here is the non-sport Australian card he has(Spurgeon)...
Some of the boxers with the "hot dog" logo almost look like they belong in n172...Here are a few boxer types that I have...

Burdick did not do a good job cataloging Goodwin & Co cards. For starters, there is no one Old Judge set, just like there is no one Topps set. There were many sets issued over a number of years, in the case of Old Judges over the period from 1886-90. Many of the earlier Old Judge sets were not solely baseball sets, but multiple topic sets which included boxers, other athletes, actors and actresses, politicians, etc. The script cards were a multiple subject set, as were the low number cards and the “0” number cards. In the Old Judge book we catalog the later two sets in the Appendix section. Unfortunately, there are still some holes in our cataloging of these sets, although far less now than when we did the book almost twelve years ago.
The cards with the floating sausage Old Judge logo are from the script series. They do belong with the script baseball players. They are not a separate set. Last edited by oldjudge; 02-02-2020 at 02:19 PM. |

I was thinking these author cards were Australian, but I noticed the captions were very similar to this Mutrie. The Mutrie has an additional copyright line by Goodwin, 1888. I notice that the Mutrie I have has a little different caption format than the 336-1 in y'all's guide.
The set is easier to tackle when you break it down into different series and categories or teams and players, than trying to see it as one gigantic set of historical figures. I'm still learning, but I also forget about as fast as I learn. Rob

I think the author cards are either from here or British (yes, there are British ones too). As I remember, the British cards have fonts similar to ours. They are neat though.
To further complicate matters, some 1890 Players’ League cards have a different font than on 1889 cards. The letters appear slightly thinner. |

I checked my image file and I misremembered--Slavin has a regular OJ mount, no Dog's Head.
