Sad that we’re seeing guys from the glory days pass away. Really like the Weaver top along with photo of Earl (wearing it) and Billy.

Default Orioles Scrapbook Cards

Here are some neat items, that could valuable or not, but it's the kind of stuff I like to collect.

These are the 1960-1963 scrapbook cards printed in the Baltimore News Post daily during spring training. There could be other years, but I've never seen any before 1960 or after 1963. They are similar to the Dayton Daily News cards.

More info and checklists are available at the following links.

Alan,

I'm with you; those are the type of odd-ball stuff I like to collect as well. I don't think I have all the Brooks examples, but I do try to pick up other examples of Orioles as well on these newspaper cutouts. I'll have to dig them out at some point and see what I'm missing. I know there's one year I don't think I have any at all...

Great stuff. Thanks so much for the information you provided on these Baltimore newspaper cutouts.

Default Frank Robinson

Day 20 (January 20, 2020 – 020)

I’m so thankful that Frank Robinson was traded to the Orioles in late ’65 and was considered by the Reds, “an old 30”. Brooks said, “Frank gave us everything of himself and we accepted everything he gave us.”…”He solidified the club” and “We became a great team when he came.”

Brooks and Frank signed 8x10 photo

I hope everyone has a great Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!

Default Nagashima

Posted for Clint (ksfarmboy) This card is from the 1975 NST Mr. Baseball set and is card #62. It looks like Earl Weaver with the mic (correct me if I'm wrong) along with Shigeo Nagashima and Brooks Robinson being interviewed together.

There are two cards, which include card #62, with Brooks pictured in this set.

I have the two cards in this set purchased from Scott (quitcrab) years ago. I'm sure both photos for these cards were taken when the Orioles toured Japan in 1971 just three days after losing to the Pittsburgh Pirates in seven games. It was a month tour in Japan to play 18 games against the best teams in Japan. The Orioles won 12 games, lost 2 and tied four.

Looking at card #62 up close that's likely not Earl Weaver so I'm not sure who it is; interpreter?

The card below shows Nagashima with Brooks wearing a blue yakata playing a traditional drum.

I think the announcer is Jim McKay from ABC's Wide World of Sports fame, who was a Baltimore native and who later had minority ownership stake in the Orioles.

While we are on the Orioles 1971 Japan Tour theme, here are a few ticket stubs from the tour. I posted a few publications a couple of days ago. Not knowing Japanese, my guess is they are from Oct 24, Oct 27 and Nov 14.

Default Orioles Scrapbook Newspaper Cutouts

I've posted a few of these in previous posts and highlighted the sets in post #349, but thought it was a good time to revisit them for some of the new followers. Plus, Mark and I love this type of stuff.

The Baltimore News-Post inserted scrapbook cards into their newspapers, during spring training, from 1960-1963. They were designed to be cut out of the newspaper each day. The sets contain 45-50 cards each year and include many rookie prospects. The 1960 set was 4x7 and numbered, while the 1961-1963 sets were 5x8 and not numbered.

Complete checklists are available in post #349.

Here are the Brooks Robinson cards from each year.

Day 308 (November 3, 2020 – 308)

Make sure you go out and VOTE if you haven’t already.

Scott (quitcrab) has helped me so much with my Brooks collection and this piece comes from his collection; he was nice enough to part with it. Some items just stand out as keepers and this is one of those. Who knows why; it’s just the look of the thing. It’s a foldout brochure by United Citizens for Nixon for his 1968 presidential election. Nixon was the Republican nominee, and was a former Vice President, and was up against the Democratic nominee, incumbent Vice President Hubert Humphrey.

The pamphlet entitled, “Athletes for NIXON” pictures the great Arnold Palmer with Nixon on the cover and Brooks is pictured on the back cover along with other personalities of the day. Nixon had some great athletes of the day endorsing his candidacy.
