Default Mail Day!

Picked up this AWESOME Tris Speaker model from the Sanford Bat Company.
I can't find very much information on the Sanford Bat Company, but I know they are from Sanford, Maine; so this is a must have for my Maine collection.

Totally beat up, but that is the best kind!

Default 1871 America's Cup Winner

Well here I am going off the reservation again...yes has condition issues but find another...here's the story...This is an c1871 albumen print...actually it's two joined albumens which combined as seen are 21 5/8" wide x 9 1/8" tall...that's just the photo excluding the backing and frame...

THE SCENE
The image is a panoramic of a Regatta between the NY Yacht Club and the Eastern Yacht club...more precisely ten minutes before the race started...that according to the printed information below...and speaking of the printing below...I'm very taken by the treatment...that is, how the photographer who produced it laid it all out i.e. designed the whole display...having all kinds of information what's going on in the picture...the crescendo being the legend along the bottom edge giving the names of the boats (yachts)...without that ya got nothing almost...but with it....it's a very good piece of Yachting history....and here's the hook...

THE YACHT COLUMBIA JOINT WINNER OF 1871 AMERICA'S CUP
In the photo is the Yacht Columbia identified by the legend...The Columbia went on to win the America's Cup purportedly a month after this photo was taken...I have more research to do but that's what the seller said in the listing...so to be confirmed...But I do know the Columbia was built in the same year as the photo...

So in baseball card jargon I got the Columbia's rookie card LOL...I plan a feature on it and will continue the research after I get it...should be here next week...hopeful the original wavy glass make it....

I'm from Mount Morris NY. I just picked up this 1940s/1950s Mount Morris baseball uniform. It's not a high ticket item, but it holds a lot of meaning to me and brings back many fond memories.

Default January 2020 pickups

Happy New Year to everyone on net54!
I added a couple of small but fun pickups last night which I think are pretty cool.
1) A baseball youth medal from 1928 that honors a NJ boy's unique pitching accomplishment of hurling back-to-back consecutive no-hitters like Johnny Vander Meer.
Ironically, Vandy hailed from NJ (Midland Park) as well and was a youth pitching star during the same era. Vandy hurled several no-hitters during his youth, but not back-to-back. Unique & cool!

2) Two St. Louis Browns ticket stubs and ticket envelope to the game played on July 19th, 1953 @ StL.
This was Bobo Holloman's final game in a season that he pitched a no-hitter in his first ML start.
Two months later he was sent back to the minors, never returning to the bigs ever again.

Bobo Holloman has always been interesting to me personally. He is arguably the least likely pitcher to hurl a no-hitter, but he did it.
It's also important to note that HOF pitcher Satchel Paige also got his 32nd career save in this game.
Because of his late career entrance into the ML because of the color barrier Ol' Satch only had 33 career saves.
Pretty cool graphics on the Brownie's ticket envelope. I've never seen one of the from 1953 season, but I love all the color.
