I wouldn't buy raw. Third party graders came into existence because of all the fraud in the hobby. Even with the ineptitude of the TPGs at catching alterations, they still catch a lot. I still trust a card in a holder over raw.

Congrats on the newborn!

I am also of the generation who chased Maas and Plantier rookie cards and am still waiting for that investment to pay off. I also have two little ones (boy and girl) who....well, I'm not sure if I want them to follow me into this hobby or not to be honest (I'm now aware that my youth could have been spent doing something slightly more productive than chasing Maas and Plantiers), but at least I understand the desire there!

I don't do high grade stuff, but I also love the league leader cards from the 60s and 70s, especially the ones which coincidentally have all HOFers (like the 1963 NL home run leaders where all five are in cooperstown, or the 66 Topps NL batting leaders with Aaron/Mays/ Clemente).
