I don't know what set this is from (if any) or if it is real or fake HOWEVER, a seller by the name of ACOFIND from Indiana used to sell these and they were all fake.

According to my copy Standard Catalog of Vintage Baseball Cards, it is from a set purported to be issued in 1917 by Davis Printing Works. There is supposedly only one complete set known to exist; therefore I would assume that the card shown is a reprint.

Here is a thread about these cards from the Archive Center of this forum:

Tom,
Thank you very much. I was looking for Davis and did not think of White Sox Team issue. With all this information I will pass on to him that his card is believed to be a reprint.
I appreciate all the info the board has provided me.

I was at a party several years ago, maybe 7?, and was casually speaking with another collector when one of our party said he had that uniquely known 1917 set. I said, "it figures".

ps...I like it when 16 yrs old threads get linked to. Time flies..

Yes, it is great when that happens. I have passed the info on to the fellow but haven't heard back and don't figure I will since I told him it was most likely a repo.

It has that faux-aged yellowing and unnatural staining common to the negro league and other fakes seen in recent years. Clever of them to rip a chunk out to add credibility when they know that would diminish its appeal very little to a potential buyer who thought it was real.
