It was always assumed the set was issued in 1887, but we now know it was 1888. John Clarkson was traded to Boston in April, 1888, and he appears in the set wearing a Boston uniform.

N167 Old Judge were issued probably in 1886, and the first N172's in 1887. So they preceded A & G.
