It's about 26 1/2 inches long excluding its tassels.

Hey guys, hoping to get your thoughts on this pennant I pick up recently. The seller listed it as 1930’s and it definitely has an old look to it. The older pennant I have all have the design screened/painted on. This pennant has the words and logo in felt and is not sewn on. Is this common? I’m questioning the authenticity. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I saw that on eBay and was indecisive. I leaned towards no good so I didn’t bid on it. The seller did have other vintage items that were good, but in the end I just couldn’t convince myself

Here are the original mini pennants. I have seen the Ebbets large pennants for at least 5 or so different teams from this set.

My question is how do you know if its an authentic 1958 opening day of Dodger Stadium Pennant?
I saw the pennant on Offer Up. The person is asking $200.00 for it. |

If you meant to say it's dated 1962, I don't think that pennant has ever been reproduced. Is it the two-toned version with red and blue felt, sewn together vertically? Assuming so, it should be legit, and not a reproduction. Post a picture here if you want us to verify. That said, you should not have to pay $200 for that piece. On a very good day, it's a $100 pennant in nice condition. They turn up with relative frequency, as I believe more were produced than could originally be sold at the stadium. Here's a typical nice example that sold for $68... http://insidetheparkcollectibles.com...t-lot5247.aspx So if you wait it out just a bit, you should be able to find a nice one for less. Hope this helps. Last edited by perezfan; 06-07-2019 at 12:16 AM. |

Thank you for the information. Yes I meant 1962. I offered him $100 but he wouldn't take it. I will play the waiting game.

So you don't think it was a Red Ball? It certainly appears similar.

1. The didn't issue large pennants of minor league teams. 2. They only issued one mini pennant for the Brewers. You can see it in the previous pic I posted.

At least your Brewers Pennant is authentic and of the era, as opposed to the other example.
Yours has proper aging, a correct spine and painted/screened graphics (as opposed to the tell-tale raised velvet). Neat rare pennant! |

BUT, there was at least one manufacturer that glued the letters to the body. If you're able to examine one of these pennants in person, it'll be fairly obvious that the letters are felt; but, on the reverse, there'll be no stitching outlining the spot where each letter sits. I suspect this was done to lower production costs. Running a sewing machine takes time and and an experienced operator. Glue ... not so much. I don't think this production method ever really caught on. For one, glue tends to crack when a pennant is waved back and forth. It also breaks down with time. It had to be cheaper to just screen print the lettering and be done with it.

Time to defibrillate this thread...CLEAR!!!!
This baby just sold on Ebay while listed as an International League minor league baseball pennant...However, I feel that's wrong. This pennant is made of 1960s material (the baseball Bears disappeared around 1949) which would make it a Newark Bears Continental Football League pennant. The spine and tassels also scream 1960s. Curious what others thought. ![]()

I would lean towards football as well. I have seen a few late 1940s Pennants with this cloth material and sporting these "flimsy" type of tassels. That Brooklyn Dodgers Football Pennant with the Bum would be one example.
But this cloth material and construction was far more prevalent from the late 1950s to mid 1960s. It could conceivably be either Baseball or Football, but I'd lean pretty heavily towards Football. The Bear logo looks more "football-ish" as well. I don't know the color scheme for either team off the top of my head. But would guess this pennant was once light-to-medium blue, and has since faded to grey. Perhaps it would help to research the colors for the two teams, if anyone here wants to invest the time. That could help narrow it down as well. |
