Hiroshi Nakao was a great pitcher for the Yomiuri Giants (in Tokyo) from 1939 to 1957. This card is from the JGA19 set, which was issued as a supplement to the new year's day 1952 issue of a Japanese children's magazine. It came in strips and the kids cut them down. Whoever cut this strip was a bit overenthusiastic with the scissors - there's supposed to be a little bit of text above and below the picture. The text on the right gives his name and below, in parentheses, his team.
His estimates are sometimes questionable, but according to Gary Engel (who wrote the price guide for Japanese cards) there are fewer than ten copies known. |
