I like the Cobb route, but I'd go with the best looking E101/e102 leaning on bat. Might only be able to an authentic one at that price point, but for a first prewar card, that would be my choice. I guess I really should think about upgrading mine at some point.

Dave's 1921 cobb exhibit on the BST right now would be a great first vintage cobb for less than $500!

I was thinking the same thing Pete, that`s a nice card. It doesn`t quite fit the topic but for me the best looking Ted Williams "48" Leaf for under 1 K sounds good. Always liked that card. Another choice Cy Young E-90, it would mostly likely be trimmed but still a nice looking example could be had for about 1 K. Cool topic.........

I love the leaf williams and the e90-1 young(boston) too...and both are in my collection.
Truth is there are a plethora of nice cobbs on ebay for $1000 or less...Caramels...Tobaccos, etc...cards that were $500 cards a few years ago...$1000+ now! Get em while they're only $1000. |

As points of reference, an e101 cobb in a BVG A holder (trimmed with good eye appeal) sold in both July and October 2018 for less than $700 both times. I also bought an SGC 1.5 E90-1 Young for less than $500 last month (granted, it has paper loss and crease on the front, but still)
