Quite an excruciating stretch, but judges will reluctantly accept "who is Ban Johnson."
The question we were looking for was "who is Scotty Barr." (A's, 1908-09)

Astyanax Douglass (sorry, omitted an s before) cup-o'-coffeed for Reds in 1921 and 1925
and is our favorite pre-war name.

No one has yet buzzed in on "understand burnt remains."

Partial credit because Camp Skinner is probably as good as the real answer, but your answer is "dead" wrong. The correct answer is a member of more than one Halls of Fame. Camp Skinner is not.

Sorry, nice try, but judges rule against that answer.
We were looking for "Who is Ken Ash?" -- Ken Ash, White Sox '25, Reds '28-30.

Vehicle, toes warm --
"Who is Louis Sockalexis?," Alex? "Loose sock, a Lexus?"
Oy.

You'll take "Ancient Obscurities" for $100. ...

Who is "Hick Carpenter"?

Another unnotable 19th century player with a long career doing something other than baseball.

Correct, although there might be some argument over "unnotable." Not many other left-handed 3rd basemen
anyone can point to (with either hand), and despite that bar sinister, no mere cup-o'coffee footnote he.
From his SABR bio:
"Pete Palmer and Gary Gillette honored him with their Ex Post Facto Award as the American Association’s
Most Valuable Player in 1882. Charles F. Faber named him the league’s best third baseman
for 1882, 1883, and 1885, with his 1882 performance being the best ever recorded in the league’s history."
Just sayin'.

Another easy one, same category:

Hick is in the vocabulary and database of every forum member only when followed by "up". Excuse me.

Cookie Lavagetto.
Have never gotten through a toll booth with a cookie instead of money, but "lava ghetto" has to fill the bill.

Sorry, close, on the right track, but Cecil Espy not what we were looking for --
correct answer "Duke Esper." Duke Esper.
