Default 1949 LEAF set re-visited....show us your cards

And, here is another group of short-prints....this brings our total to 33 cards displayed on this page.
Sixteen more will be forthcoming to complete the 2nd series group of 49 subjects.

Here are 15 more 2nd series cards....which leaves us just one more card to show to complete this 49-card display on this page.

Anyone want to guess who this 49th guy is ?

There are some pretty nice looking Babe Ruth cards on display in this thread. Here are my two Ruth cards from my two sets.

The fine looking Ruth on the left...I paid only a penny for in the Spring of 1949. It is not unusual to find the Babe Ruth cards
from this set in pretty nice condition, because a lot of us kids did not "flip" them, nor stick them in our bicycle spokes (as we
did with many of the other LEAF cards in our youth).

Here are the wrappers of the two competing Gum Co. in 1949. The Bowman wax packs were available for a Penny and a Nickel.
I remember only Penny wax packs of LEAF in my neighborhood.

The long-sleeve card of Cliff Aberson appeared in the early issues of the 1949 LEAF cards. The short-sleeve version
appeared later in the game. My guess is that the short-sleeve Aberson cards are simply the result of printing flaw.

Ted -

You make reference to " short print " with some of the cards. Is this due to the cards being a " single print " in relation to the rest of the cards, or were all cards to be printed in the same amount, but due to layout of the cards on a sheet some were overlooked and not placed as often for printing.

Default 1949 LEAF set re-visited....show us your cards

Hi Lou

The so-called "Short-Prints" is a term which the hobby years ago used to identify these cards. I prefer to refer to these 1949 LEAF cards as the "2nd series" cards
which were issued in the Summer of 1949. These 49 cards were limited in both production and distribution. Research indicates that this 2nd series of 1949 LEAF's
were marketed only in Eastern Massachusetts, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio. While the 1st series of 49 cards were marketed in large numbers nationwide.
My understanding as to why this occurred was due to litigation problems between the BOWMAN GUM CO. and the LEAF GUM CO. in 1949.

All 49 cards in this 2nd series are displayed in this thread in Posts #22, 27, 28, 29, 30, and 31.

1st Series.....issued March 1949

2nd Series.....issued Summer 1949

Default 1949 Leaf BB set re-visited....show us your cards......

….or, show us your 1949 LEAF Premiums.

Note that SGC identifies the year of these Premiums as 1949. And, I think PSA does, also. Yet they incorrectly identify the 1949 BB cards. Trust me, guys...…
these Premiums were inserted in the 24-count Wax-Back boxes which the 1949 BB cards were packaged in. I would say, PSA and SGC are totally confused ! ?

Ted mentions the Bowman/Leaf lawsuit. Here is a contemporary Boston Globe article on the suit filed by Boston ace Warren Spahn and five other players. May 5, 1949.
