I love the Beneker studies. Congratulations on the purchases. It’s amazing the talent Baseball Magazine had working for it—in addition to Beneker, they had Kernan for cover illustrations and Conlon as staff photographer.

Thanks. I wish I could have afforded more of them, but several that I was interested in went much higher than expected.

Picked this up and now only need the Cobb to complete my set (not counting the Baker as only one is known).
Jeff, the Wood photo is remarkable! I love the look on his face and is one of my favorite photos. Congrats. Scott, I had a feeling you would be after those. Nice pickups Last edited by bobfreedman; 08-18-2018 at 12:52 PM. |

Agreed! A special photo. And that fan is great too. Some great pickups this month.

Picked up a 1979 World Series Pittsburgh Pirates banner which would have been used during the World Series.

Thought these were cool, given my interest in California baseball and my son's interest in trains. They are very colorful and will display well. I'd never seen them before.

Picked up this image of the 1905 Harvard team, featuring William Clarence Matthews, in Leland’s. I’ve been looking for an image of Matthews for about five years to fill I hole in a collection of images related to baseball’s color line.
Matthews went on to play for an integrated team in Vermont before leaving baseball. Boston’s Traveler newspaper wrote at the time: “Because his skin is black he can never play on any but itinerant colored nines that at best eke out a hand to mouth existence. With all its insurmountable handicaps, baseball is not the place for Matthews. He should begin the battle for life somewhere else.” And so he did. |
