I would get it out of that holder into whatever they will grade it without a qualifier.

Default 52 Mantle

Today is the day I added a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle to the PC. The card arrived via FedEx 20min ago. I am not one for hyperbole but this is the single biggest day of my hobby life. People have written about what it is like to own one of these cards and I can tell you that the feeling is real. It is unbelievable. Actually seeing one in your hand is an experience.

In the pantheon of life experiences this is at the table with the birth of my daughter, my wedding day, and my first kiss. The Mick's arrival may not outweigh those but it is absolutely moving.

I have been the under bidder a few times and/or could never find the right combination of price and condition. However, I saw this example and went for it. Saturated color and perfect registration. The only flaw is a crease in the upper left corner and some chipping that does not impact the image.

Also, I am very happy to have this place to share this experience.

If you ever have the opportunity to add one of these go for it.

Kris

Kris, I am so happy for you. You've expressed your feelings beautifully. I know what you're feeling; it is Mantle cardboard ecstacy! Thank you for sharing with us. It's a beauty. For what it's worth, I commend you for choosing one with strong colors and perfect registration. Those qualities are paramount with me, too. That elegant Mick will bring a nice smile to your face every time you look at it!

Way da go, bro! ---- Brian Powell

Agreed with Brian. This is a fantastic card--great color, centering that isn't annoying, and great shape. Congratulations! I've had the privilege of owning two (still own one). It felt fantastic getting them and checking them off the list. It also felt great selling one of them in the inflated market we experienced last year 🙂 Although some days I still wish I had that card...

Thanks Brian, Chris and everyone. Chris you are exactly right when you say it is a "privilege" to own one. Spot on.

Default New Mantle from the National

Picked this up in Cleveland and really like the centering on it - hard to find 57’s with decent centering.

David, John and KC,

Beautiful cards. Agreed that centering in the 57 is tough. You got a real stunner.

I've been back collecting for about 7 years and am not ashamed to admit that I generally swim in the shallow end of the hobby pool. I've mainly been building the Topps 1970s sets, with some diversions into the 1960-63 Fleers and a few oddball modern sets.

When I first started collecting I picked up a few 1956 Topps cards because I thought they were cool looking. In the intervening time, I continued to pick some 56s up here and there. Additionally, I won a 1938 Goudey Jimmie Foxx in a contest that I turned into 56 Clemente and Robinson. Last year, I realized that I had over half the set and I should probably just work it to completion.

This year, I went to the National show needing only 21 cards to complete the set, including Mantle and Koufax. I managed to get 17 of the 21 I needed, including this:

I never considered that I would be able to finish this set, but I am a mere 4 cards away. I am way more excited about it than a 52 year old man has the right to feel.
