Very nice glove box. I still need to add Brooks to my collection. There’s a few that I’ve seen over the years, but have never acquired. All the examples I have seen have a decent crease since it’s located on the corner of the box.

Thanks Mark. The Brooks has a crease on this one too. The panel is far from good condition but works for me. Good luck in your hunt!

I rarely send cards in for grading--not because of any thoughts regarding the process, but rather because hobby funds are limited. Well, I bit the bullet and sent these in. Unfortunately, when doing so, I accidentally provided the company the wrong address. They were sent there and signed for by the new tenant, who never contacted me. Two weeks later, I discovery my mistake. Fortunately, the landlord put me in touch with the tenant and I was able to retrieve them today. Photo bucket won't let me share teh photos, but was fortunate to get the following:
1. 1961 Post Cereal Panel - Skowkron/Richardon/Mantle/Klubek - PSA 6
2. 1962 Life Magazine - Mantle/Maris panel w/ Tor. Sub Tab - PSA A
3. 1968 Country Cookin - Kneeling - PSA 4

Also grabbed these as the price was right and I love the premium photo:

This isn't a new pickup as I bought it in 2016. But it's my favorite Mickey item. Had these as a kid in North Jersey. Loved going to the soda fountain/cigarette/candy store near my house and flipping through them. Lot's of nostalgia for me in stuff like this.

Nice stuff guys; I grabbed three cards from the Small Traditions auction last night: PSA graded 1953-55 Dormand VG-EX, 1955-57 Yankees photo pack VG, and Holiday Inn matchbook EX. Added them to my Master Set registry and moved up from #36 to #33. Still waiting on my submission with Bobby on the main page, and working on another bulk submission with 18 Mantles so far, probably going to be close to 30 once I get them all in and send it out.

Hey Bob I wonder where that last photo came from? Reminds me of the 1963 Bronx Bombers card with Mick, Tresh and Richardson. Always thought a Mantle / Maris card would have been much better. Wonder if that was a Topps photo that they scrapped? Would have been a great card.

Dan:

I pulled the mag and saw that the two centerfold color pics are courtesy of Topps. There is no other attribution/credit for any of the other pics but it would seem logical that some of the others (including that one you pointed out) came from Topps as well. Great spot!

Nice pick-up Ben! If I had seen it, I might have "helped" Chris in increasing your final cost.

Chris, congrats on the grades, especially the Country Cookin' post card. Also, that photo premium as well as the entire Big League Baseball Game are great items.

Nice pick-ups Ben, especially the '65 Challenge (I'm still looking for that one).
Chris, I hope you put my address on the Country Cookin' postcard that's in the mail.
Blinkme, a true Mantle rookie would always make for an awesome mail day. Congrats!

Even though I already have this Dormand postcard, I had to get this one because it was actually mailed in 1953. It also has a nice little note from a father to his son who is off in summer camp.

Love the used Dormand postcard--there is something special about postcards that were actually used. Love the 1960 Post as well! Pretty decent shape for the issue.

Default 1960 Post Mantle

Thanks for the complements. I love the the 1960 Post set. I have another Mantle which I personally cut from a box of Grape Nuts in 1960. I think what is interesting about the set, which included 5 baseball players (Mantle, Mathews, Killebrew, Kaline, & Drysdale), 2 football (Gifford & Unitas), and 2 basketball (Cousy & Pettit) is that no players of color were included. No Clemente, Mays, Aaron, Chamberlain, Russell, J. Brown, etc.

Out of curiosity, what are some of you thoughts on the 1996/97 Topps Finist Refractors? I think they're pretty sharp looking for sure and although there are tons of reprints out there, they did come before the flood and were issued to commemorate him after his death.

Just wondering, I can't afford the real thing so it seems like the next best.

There's a bunch of Mantle cards you can buy for $20-50 from his playing days, mainly the oddballs and multiplayer cards. The Finest are okay, but I don't see them ever gaining in value.

Oh I was looking at a few of those as well, namely the 58 all-star. But as far as the stuff that's out of reach, it seems the finest is the next best thing.

Nice! Looks like a possible resubmit for a straight 6. I'm sure it's better than 80/20 centering. Only question is what the corners would grade now. Probably worth reholdering just to get into a new tamper-evident slab.

SMR price guide has a PSA 5 list priced at $9250, so that would be the declared value.

WALK-THROUGH *$300
Any card with a declared value of $5,000 - $9,999 must be submitted at this service level or higher.

ESTIMATED TURNAROUND: 1 Business Day
Please mark outside of shipment box with "1 Day Service"

Do the top corners look better in person than the scan? They look rounded to me from the picture you provided. Definitely set PSA 5 no qualifiers as your min grade accepted.

I think I'd prefer that card in the 7 OC holder vs a straight 5. Nice pick up either way.

I would too. I would send it in with a minimum grade 6 or keep it as a 7o/c.

I would get it out of that holder into whatever they will grade it without a qualifier.

Default 52 Mantle

Today is the day I added a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle to the PC. The card arrived via FedEx 20min ago. I am not one for hyperbole but this is the single biggest day of my hobby life. People have written about what it is like to own one of these cards and I can tell you that the feeling is real. It is unbelievable. Actually seeing one in your hand is an experience.

In the pantheon of life experiences this is at the table with the birth of my daughter, my wedding day, and my first kiss. The Mick's arrival may not outweigh those but it is absolutely moving.

I have been the under bidder a few times and/or could never find the right combination of price and condition. However, I saw this example and went for it. Saturated color and perfect registration. The only flaw is a crease in the upper left corner and some chipping that does not impact the image.

Also, I am very happy to have this place to share this experience.

If you ever have the opportunity to add one of these go for it.

Kris

Kris, I am so happy for you. You've expressed your feelings beautifully. I know what you're feeling; it is Mantle cardboard ecstacy! Thank you for sharing with us. It's a beauty. For what it's worth, I commend you for choosing one with strong colors and perfect registration. Those qualities are paramount with me, too. That elegant Mick will bring a nice smile to your face every time you look at it!

Way da go, bro! ---- Brian Powell

Agreed with Brian. This is a fantastic card--great color, centering that isn't annoying, and great shape. Congratulations! I've had the privilege of owning two (still own one). It felt fantastic getting them and checking them off the list. It also felt great selling one of them in the inflated market we experienced last year 🙂 Although some days I still wish I had that card...

Default 1952 topps mantle

Thanks Brian, Chris and everyone. Chris you are exactly right when you say it is a "privilege" to own one. Spot on.

I guess I finally have something to post in this thread. I actually forgot this thread was here! I picked this up in late July.

Default New Mantle from the National

Picked this up in Cleveland and really like the centering on it - hard to find 57’s with decent centering.

David, John and KC,

Beautiful cards. Agreed that centering in the 57 is tough. You got a real stunner.

I've been back collecting for about 7 years and am not ashamed to admit that I generally swim in the shallow end of the hobby pool. I've mainly been building the Topps 1970s sets, with some diversions into the 1960-63 Fleers and a few oddball modern sets.

When I first started collecting I picked up a few 1956 Topps cards because I thought they were cool looking. In the intervening time, I continued to pick some 56s up here and there. Additionally, I won a 1938 Goudey Jimmie Foxx in a contest that I turned into 56 Clemente and Robinson. Last year, I realized that I had over half the set and I should probably just work it to completion.

This year, I went to the National show needing only 21 cards to complete the set, including Mantle and Koufax. I managed to get 17 of the 21 I needed, including this:

I never considered that I would be able to finish this set, but I am a mere 4 cards away. I am way more excited about it than a 52 year old man has the right to feel.
