1. On the auctioned '53 Bowman Mantle - Top/Bottom centering would be measured at its worst point which is the upper and bottom left corners. I would guess at that point, the centering didn't achieve 90/10.
2. On the '52 Topps...
Fred Hutchinson - If you look at the L/R centering at the bottom left, there is very little if any white border. MC means that fell less than 90/10, which appears correct to my eyes.
Johnny Schmitz - Thin but enough border on the left to easily meet 90/10, but not enough to meet 70/30 that is required for an 8.
3. If you sent both '52 Topps without qualifiers, you'd still get a MC on the Fred Hutchinson. The Johnny Schmitz would likely get a straight 6, possibly a 7. I'm basing that on guessing the centering likely hits 80/20.
