Smoky began his career in 1908 (just a brief appearance), but was an established major league pitcher by the 1909 and 1910 seasons. This still did not get him in the bigger T206 set, issued 1909-11, nor the T205 set issued in 1911, or most of the caramel issues such as E90-1, E93, E95, E96 or E98, etc. His appearance in the 1910 E91C set is probably a result of his Boston team being one of the three teams featured in this set, each team having 11 players included. His breakout year was 1911, so that is probably why it was almost mandatory that he be included in the T202 and T207 sets, and by 1912 he was one of the biggest names in baseball, but the 1910 era tobacco and caramel explosion was pretty much over by then...if there had been multiple 1913 sets issued, most likely he would have been in them all.

That’s was very informative and makes good sense. I just bought T202 wood / speaker card. It’s so cool and amazing when look at it because wood is not in many sets. Thank you again for your input! |
