Alright, show of hands. Who wants a $4 million complete T206 set, and who wants a $4 million dollar double-printed short-printed (?) Topps card from the 1950s?

I've got to agree with Glenn. If that card comes anywhere close to its estimate, then somebody is a complete fool. When you think of all the cards you could buy for 4 Million, including the Wagner, the Baltimore Ruth, the M-101-5 Ruth, a few Just So's, etc., etc., etc. Basically, for that money, you could have one of the nicest collections in the world rather than just one card.
And aren't there supposed to be four PSA10 Mantles out there? What are they worth? 10 million each? |

I wonder who consigned. As I recall one guy owns 4 of the 6 9s.

Yep, I got the same brochure in the mail...since an 8.5 sold a little over a year ago for $1.135M, I think this 9 goes for around $3M (who knows, maybe more). Quite stunning.

yes but that was the peak of the 2016 madness wasn't it? This may sell for the same price.

Seeing A LOT of folks on here trying to buy/guesstimate with their own pockets. Rule #1 of sales is don't sell out of your own pocket. I've got a funny feeling this thing will go at or above what Heritage thinks it will.

If it truly is your consignment, then best of luck with the auction.
But I don't see the price jumping $2.8M for a half point. I just don't see it. I hope I'm wrong and you make out great, but I doubt it. .

Funny about all the doubters... many of us know this card and it is definitely the nicest centered Mantle 9 out there and Evans! I’m sure I’ll give the bidding a poke! Good Luck Evan!

He had it at the national. I saw it and spoke with Evan briefly about it. An awesome looking card. Prepare to be surprised if you don't see the value in this card. The last 8.5 that was auctioned wasn't even centered. This card would sell at a considerable premium to even an off centered 9.

I have a feeling there's deep pockets that have been waiting for one of the 10's, and are tired of waiting. I wouldn't be shocked to see this break 5.

I'd be more interested in - why Heritage? Maybe Evan can't really discuss that, or wouldn't necessarily want to, which I would get. But if he could/would, I wouldn't mind hearing how that decision was made. Why not PWCC or someone else via eBay (I remember all the special attention when the Superman comic was auctioned via eBay). Maybe Memory Lane? I might be leaving one or two other options out, but it's certainly a short list of 4-5 choices. I don't imagine it was just as simple as say lowest sellers premium, because each of these auction houses also have different rules. I couldn't bid on this, but Heritage is always a bummer for me in Texas because I get hit with the sales tax - as a result I rarely end up winning auctions there but I'm 2nd/3rd quite often. Anyway, just wondering. |

1. I ultimately decided to sell the card to buy family our dream home and HA had no problem advancing me the money to do so. 2. I thought that Heritage would be the best at getting the exposure the card deserves. I use PWCC and Probstein for the vast majority of my sales but I didn't want to roll the dice in such a limited time frame of 10 days. I do recall the Action Comics #1 CGC 9.0 you're referring to that was auctioned on eBay so the idea of PWCC or someone else on eBay is not asinine. 3. I had a nice discussion with Chris Ivy at HA and proposed the crytpocurrency idea which could open the door to a few more bidders. Him being receptive to that helped my decision. 4. And lastly, as this card is auctioning, I'm like a kid in a candy store bidding in their auction. I did consider other auction houses like Goldin since they've done some impressive numbers on elite items. In the end, my gut was to go to HA and let it fly no reserve. Whatever happens, this is a really fun experience. |

No doubt. They have become the dominant auction house IMO, with an astonishing selection each major auction. I still think they should tone down those way overbright scans, but why would they listen to me lol.

Just as a comparison, one of the Gem Mint cards has a slight tilt in the centering and does not compare to the one currently at auction.

Anyone recall what the last 1952 Topps Mantle PSA 10 sold for? And when?
I don't recall one being sold for quite some time. |

Gem Mint 10. There have been three 1952 Topps Mantle's graded Gem Mint 10 by PSA: Fogel-Murphy Specimen. The card came from the fabulous 1952 Topps collection of Mark Murphy. It was then sold by dealer Bill Hughes to Collectors Universe CEO David Hall for $50,000 in 1993. When Hall's collection was auctioned by Superior in 1996, renowned collector Marshall Fogel purchased the card for $121,000. Wormser-Candiotti Specimen. This specimen was from Ed Wormser's wonderful collection. Sold in the Wormser sale by Robert Edward Auctions in 1996. Resold by Superior in 1998 to former major league pitcher, Tom Candiotti, for $104,500. Roehrig-Garcia Specimen. First sent in to PSA for grading by dealer Craig Roehrig. Sold to Peter Garcia in 1999 for $160,000. Resold by Superior to an anonymous collector in June, 2001 for $275,000. |

Does PSA keep a record of who grades/authenticates these high dollar cards and what scientific methods they use to supply their "expert" opinion on its originality? Do they even know the history behind a $4+million dollar card to help determine if its real or a forgery before putting it in a slab? I would think that with a day turnaround this would be impossible.

My only concern is that if I make a run for the PSA 9 Mantle it might slow me down on my low-mid grade T205 set. Choices choices..... At 5 mil the sales tax will be close to Jeff's Ty Cobb back.

Craziest thing about all of this is that some board member assured us a few weeks back that in 20 years people won't even remember who Mickey Mantle was. Think the dude was collecting Melkey Cabrera rookie hologram cards or something.
