Hi Gang:
I am NOT a photo collector or even a prewar collector, but I saw this photo in a Heritage auction and really think they have this one wrong regardless of what is written on the photo. Please take a look and LMK your thoughts and perhaps a correct ID of the player(s). If we can find a definitive answer I will contact HA. Sisler was a left-handed batter. That ain't him. Unless he's the fuzzy guy way on the left.

Besides the aforementioned right handed disparity, it doesn't look like ole George at all...

It says Sisler on the photo so I don't blame them for the id.

They updated the description
1/23/2018 Description Update Offered is a 4" x 5 1/2" vintage photograph featuring a hitter taking batting practice. Beautiful image on the front with several stampings on the reverse. Writing on the photograph indicated the player was George Sisler, but that is not the case.

To reply to those of you who commented on my post:
Yes, the left/right batting was the first give away to me, as well as the facial difference. Guess they read the posts here since it was corrected. Leon, did you know just by looking it was not Sisler? Bet you did. I don't agree they get a mulligan because his name was on the photo. I am by far no expert on old photos since I am a 50's/60's guy, but the moment I saw it, I knew it was not Sisler. Seems to me people working at a major AH should have some basic knowledge and recognition better than the info this listing originally provided. Much like PSA mislabeling a card from one set as another, I expect a higher level of knowledge and expertise from those who grade/auction these items. I understand mistakes can be made, but a second set of eyes on things so this does not happen is not too much to ask, is it? |
