I remember reading an interview with DiMaggio, who said when he first heard that song, he exclaimed to himself "I didn't know I went anywhere."

After that he was back on TV as Mr. Coffee.
I remember reading that Joe was actually considering suing Paul Simon because he didn't understand the verse's positive connotation. Reminded me of Ted Williams attempting to probe DiMag's mind about hitting at one all-star game and concluding that the latter knew next to nothing about hitting--he just did it. Which was what Joe D. said to an inquiring Mike Epstein--"you can't learn it; you either have it or you don't." Not a guy with an inquisitive, analytical nature to be sure.

Regards,

Larry

How could anyone leave this forum? A directionless thread turns into a discussion on past members, rival forums, Shakespeare, Simon and Garfunkel, Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams! Classic stuff! Exactly why we're all here!

Maybe people leave because we cannot keep a single thread on track. A bunch of guys having multiple conversations at once. Not sure why that is?

Wait, squirrel....

This thread is on schedule and proceeding exactly as planned. Carry on.

Richard Ben Cramer's biography absolutely savaged him. It seemed a quite one-sided presentation.

The Merchant of Venice: "The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth like the gentle rain from heaven upon the place beneath..."

The entire speech is still ingrained in my head after memorizing it for high school... 25 years later!
