Kawika,

I was trying to see how Google Translate worked with Hawaiian. This is the way this conversation translated:

Adam: Nui kaleka (many incorrect)

Kawika: Mahalo. Ke olioli nei au e makemake ia. (Thank you. I am glad to be desired.)

Me: Aloha. He kā 'oe me ka hoʻohana Google Unuhi? A i 'ole e' oe e olelo aku i ka 'ōlelo? Au e olelo aku i ka 'ōlelo.

I typed in Google Translate “Hello. Do you guys use Google Translate? Or do you speak Hawaiian? I do not speak Hawaiian. “

David: Oe e olelo Hawaii? Maikai loa! Hea i kou wen' grad? (You say Hawaii? Sounds good! Where your wen 'Recipes?)

I have to say, it did not quite work right.

Ed: I lived in the islands for twenty years so have some acquaintance with the Hawaiian language. One rarely hears conversational Hawaiian around Honolulu but there is plenty of exposure to the language in many aspects of daily life. For starters the pidgin that locals speak is peppered with Hawaiian words; my work as a land surveyor required an ability to read original deeds and property descriptions; and my love of Hawaiian music stimulated an interest in deciphering lyrics. I even took a night school course in ka 'ōlelo at Kamehameha. So I am not entirely clueless although I still can't conduct a simple conversation. I read your comments and deduced (incorrectly it seems) that you did speak Hawaiian. The fact that you used na okina and na kahako threw me off because Google Hawaiian doesn't include those diacritical marks. [Google Hawaiian is the greatest thing ever on the internet although it really makes a hash of things]. Anyway, Adam told me "great card" and I replied "Thank you. Glad you liked it." I wasn't asking him for a date. To you I wrote "You speak Hawaiian? Awesome! Where did you graduate?" mixing Hawaiian and pidgin in a lame, make that very lame, attempt at humor. There you have it. What was this thread about again? Oh yeah, Zeenuts with coupons. Here's another kaleka nui.

Zeenuts with coupons attached seem to be few and far between. Just dont remember seeing them come up very often.

Just found these. Were bought in the 1980s at a show and stashed away only to see the light of day recently.

Only a handful graded with coupon by PSA
